Lexington Legends News Release
(AUGUSTA, Ga.) The Lexington Legends rallied for four runs in the ninth inning and then had to hold off an Augusta rally before taking a 6-4 win over the GreenJackets Friday night.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning. Elier Hernandez, who had three hits in the game, led off with a single and Dex Kjerstad reached on an error by third baseman Will Callaway. Both runners moved up on a sacrifice by Humberto Arteaga and both scored on a triple by Carlos Garcia. But Augusta came back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth to the tie the game.
The score remained 2-2 until the bottom of the eighth, when Rafael Rodriguez' single through a drawn-in infield drove home the tie-breaking run for Augusta.
Hernandez got the Legends started in the ninth with a leadoff single, and Kjerstad followed with another base hit. After bunting foul, Arteaga indicated he would bunt again, but then took a full swing and lined a double into right center field, scoring Hernandez with the tying run as Kjerstad moved to third. After Garcia was intentionally walked, Alexis Rivera was called out on strikes, but Alfredo Escalera lined a single to center field to put the Legends in front 4-3. Taylor walked, forcing home another run, and Garcia came home on a wild pitch by Augusta reliever Nick Jones.
But Augusta rallied in the bottom of the ninth. A hit batsman and two walks loaded the bases, and one run scored as Randy Ortiz grounded out to first. Legends reliever Tim Hill then struck out Callaway and Ty Ross to end the game.
Kevin Perez (2-3), who entered the game in the seventh inning, got the win. Hill, who pitched the ninth, picked up his sixth save.
Augusta reliever Raymundo Montero (1-6) was the losing pitcher.
The second game of the three-game series will be played Saturday night. Game time is 7 p.m.
