Lexington Legends News Release
Chase Vallot hit his first home run as a Lexington Legend and drove in four runs as the Legends outscored the Greenville Drive 13-11 Monday night in Greenville. The Legends had trailed 8-4 after three innings.
Vallot, the 40th overall pick in the 2014 draft, joined the Legends May 9. His two-run homer in the sixth inning was part of a six-run outburst that gave the Legends a 13-8 lead. Greenville came back with three runs in the seventh to cut the lead to two, but the Drive didn't score again.
Yoan Moncada, the Red Sox prospect from Cuba who received a $31.5 million signing bonus from Boston earlier this year, played second base for Greenville in his debut game in the Red Sox organization. He was 0-for-3 with a walk, scored two runs and committed an error at second base.
After each team scored a run in the first, the Legends took the lead with two in the second. Back-to-back doubles by Vallot and Humberto Arteaga produced one run, and two infield outs brought Arteaga around to score.
Wander Franco's solo homer in the third gave Lexington a 4-1 lead, but the Drive took command by scoring seven runs in the bottom of the third, helped by four Lexington errors, four walks and a wild pitch. Derek Miller's three-run double with two outs capped the big inning and put Greenville up 8-4.
The Legends responded with three runs in the top of the fifth. Ryan O'Hearn drove in a run with a double, and Vallot's two-out, two-run single cut Greenville's lead to one at 8-7.
Michael Hill started Lexington's sixth-inning rally with a one-out single. He went to third on a single by Corey Toups, who continued to second base on the throw to third. Elier Hernandez tripled to right field, scoring Hill and Toups to put the Legends in front 9-8. Hernandez scored as O'Hearn reached on a fielding error by Moncada. Franco's single sent O'Hearn to third, from where he scored on Brandon Downes' ground out. Vallot followed with a two-run homer, and the Legends led 13-8.
Greenville's three-run seventh inning included a two-run homer by Michael Chavis, but reliever Matt Strahm, who gave up the homer to Chavis, shut out the Drive over the last two innings.
Jake Newberry (1-1) who entered the game in the third inning, worked four and one-third innings to get the win. He allowed three hits and three runs. Strahm picked up his fourth save.
Greenville reliever Carlos Pinales (1-1) was the losing pitcher.
The Legends have won four of five games on the current road trip. Game two of the three-game series in Greenville will be played Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
