League's Worst Offense Collects 18 Hits off I's

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (May 18, 2015) - The Intimidators gave up a season-high 18 hits to the league's worst offense as the Asheville Tourists defeated Kannapolis, 13-10, on Monday night at McCormick Field. The Tourists came into the game batting .221 on the year but recorded their season-high with 18 hits in 39 at-bats on the night to take the series opener.

All 18 batters recorded at least one hit as Kannapolis pounded out 14 hits of its own, led by Toby Thomas who went 3-for-5 with a double and a pair of runs scored. The game's 23 combined run and 32 combined hits are both season-highs for Intimidators games in the 2015 season.

Asheville scored runs in each of the first seven innings before Matt Cooper held them off the board with a scoreless eighth.

Yoely Bello (1-2) tossed 3 and 1/3 innings of scoreless ball for Asheville to earn the win. He allowed three inherited runners to score before quieting the Kannapolis offense by retiring the last nine batters he faced. Brad Salgado (0-3) took the loss for Kannapolis, giving up three runs on six hits.

The Tourists matched their season-high with eight stolen bases on the night, the most Kannapolis has allowed this season as both Drew Weeks and Wes Rogers swiped three bags apiece.

Eddy Alvarez drew two walks, his South Atlantic League-leading 26th and 27th of the season, while going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Hunter Jones, Ethan Gross, and Ryan Plourde also drove in two runs for Kannapolis.

Asheville took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Forrest Wall drove a two-out base hit to right-center field, scoring Drew Weeks.

Intimidators starting pitcher Yelmison Peralta got into trouble in the second inning, walking three batters which the Tourists converted into three runs on just one hit for a 4-0 lead.

Eddy Alvarez put Kannapolis on the board in the third inning. James Baldwin doubled and stole third base, and with two outs, Alvarez singled to left field to cash Baldwin.

Trailing 7-1, the Intimidators rallied for six runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. The first seven Kannapolis batters all reached safely, with the first five collecting hits, in the big inning,

Asheville jumped back in front in the home half of the fourth when Dwyer scored on a wild pitch for an 8-7 advantage.

The game took place in 3 hours and 36 minutes, the longest 9-inning game Kannapolis has played this season. The Intimidators and Tourists have a history of long outings, as the two teams played a 15-inning game last season in Kannapolis that took more than five hours.

The Intimidators and Tourists play Game 2 of this 3-game series on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. as RHP Luis Martinez (1-2, 3.57 ERA) toes the rubber for Kannapolis against Asheville's LHP Sam Howard (1-4, 4.60). The team returns to Kannapolis on Thursday to open a 7-game home stand.
