Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
KEIZER, Ore. - The Volcanoes rode seven plus shutout innings plus two home runs in the fourth inning to a 2-0 victory over the Boise Hawks on Saturday night in front of 2,454 fans at Volcanoes Stadium.
Third-year Volcano Drew Leenhouts (7-3, 2.47 ERA) picked up his league-leading seventh win in another strong outing. Leenhouts completed 7 2/3 innings while recording five strikeouts, setting the table for the Volcanoes' fifth shutout this season.
Ryan Halstead relieved Leenhouts in the eighth and quickly recorded the final out of the inning thanks to a four-pitch strikeout. Halstead finished the game by retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth to pick up his sixth save of the season.
Miguel Gomez belted his sixth home run of the season over the right field wall to start the bottom of the fourth for the Volcanoes. After Chris Shaw and Jose Vizcaino Jr. struck out, it was John Riley at the plate. Riley deposited another Jack Wynkoop (2-4, 4.80 ERA) fastball over the left-field wall to extend the Salem-Keizer lead to 2-0.
The first three innings of the contest flew by as only four batters reached base. Scott Burcham started the top of the fourth with a double for the Hawks. However, Leenhouts would stand him on third after recording a strikeout, a ground out and another strikeout to end the inning.
Kyle Haines was ejected in the second inning after Boise's Wynkoop picked off Volcanoes' second baseman Junior Amion at first base. It was the fourth time this season the first-year manager has been ejected.
Player of the Game: Leenhouts worked past the seventh inning for the third time this season, including the second time in three outings. The southpaw worked his ERA to 2.57, keeping his team in line for the win despite the offense coming up with four hits on the night.
Up Next: The rubber match will start at 5:05 p.m. tomorrow at Volcanoes Stadium. Nolan Riggs (4-2, 3.04 ERA) will face Dylan Craig (0-0, 3.68 ERA) of Boise. It will be the ninth rubber match of the season for the Volcanoes. They have a record of 2-6 in series deciding games.
