Eugene Emeralds News Release

EUGENE, Ore. - Eugene had twice as many hits as Hillsboro, but the Hops turned three hits into three runs and the Emeralds lost, 3-0, on Saturday night at PK Park.

Eugene (18-13, 35-34) stranded 10 runners in the loss and is now tied with Hillsboro in the Northwest League South Division standings. The Hops and Emeralds meet again on Sunday in Eugene's final home game of the regular season.

Hillsboro starter Carlos Hernandez (5-3) picked up the win after tossing six shutout innings with five hits allowed. He struck out six while walking just one. Brody Greer picked up a two-inning save with three straight strikeouts in the eighth.

Eugene reliever Casey Bloomquist (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one run on one hit with one walk and four strikeouts. Emeralds starter Kyle Miller also allowed just one hit in three shutout innings.

Eugene's best chance to score was in the bottom of the seventh. Ian Rice started the frame with a double, but a slick play by Hillsboro's Dansby Swanson on a grounder to short allowed him to gun down Rice at third in the next at-bat. Eugene regrouped, however, as a pair of walks loaded the bases with two outs. Once again Swanson was able to make a play on a grounder and get Hillsboro out of the jam.

The Hops scored once in the top of the fifth, on a triple and RBI ground, before adding two more runs in the eighth without getting a hit. Eugene reliever Scott Effross issued two one-out walks and two wild pitches, allowing the Hops to use a fielder's choice and a RBI groundout to score a pair.

Up Next: The Emeralds and Hops close out their three-game series at PK Park on Sunday at 5:01 PM. It is the final regular season home game for Eugene. The Ems will wear pink uniforms, which will be auctioned off with the proceeds benefitting breast cancer research.
