Leafs strike late to down Bears 4-3

St. John's skates away with a 4-3 regulation victory at Mile One Stadium in Newfoundland.

St. John's struck first with a power play goal early in the first period. Nathan Barrett took a pass from Matt Stajan to score his 12th goal of the season to give the Leafs a 1-0 lead. The Leafs would run the score to 2-0 at the 14:56 mark of the first when Tyler Beechey scored his first goal of the season with a hard wrist shot against Peter Budaj. HERSHEY would close within one before intermission when Marek Svatos scored his 13th goal of the year at the 17:45 mark. Dennis Bonvie and Martin Hlinka picked up assists on the lamp-lighter as the BEARS went to first intermission down 2-1.

In the second period, the BEARS tied the game at two when Mike Souza scored at the 3:42 mark. The goal for Souza was his third in as many games, and was assisted by Eric Perrin. St. John's retook the lead at 3-2 when Clarke Wilm scored his sixth goal of the season at the 7:39 mark. HERSHEY then rallied for the second time to tie the game when Perrin scored his 19th of the season at 15:12 of the period. Jeff Ulmer and Souza provided the assists on the goal that rallied the BEARS for the second time. HERSHEY outshot St. John's 15-7 in the second and went to second intermission tied at three.

The only goal of the third period proved to be the game-winner. After being denied on a breakaway just moments before, Nathan Perrott scored against Peter Budaj at the 15:37 mark of the third. The BEARS fall 32-27-1-0 with the loss.

The BEARS will play the second game of a two-game set at Mile One Stadium Saturday night at 6:05 p.m.
