New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Casey Lawrence was his usual, steady self on Thursday night, allowing one run over six innings to lead the Fisher Cats past the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-2, at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Lawrence earned his fourth consecutive win while New Hampshire improved to 17-6 since returning from a lengthy road trip on June 19.
The Sea Dogs (32-60) actually got on the board first against Lawrence (W; 9-8) in the top of the third. With one out, a single and a double allowed Oscar Tejeda to bring home a run on a ground out for a 1-0 Portland lead.
That advantage was only momentary as the Fisher Cats (46-42) stormed back in the bottom of the inning. It started when Shane Opitz walked, took second on a grounder, and then third on a wild pitch. Dalton Pompey brought him home with an infield single to tie the game at 1-1.
The inning continued with an infield single by Jon Berti before Portland's Justin Haley (L; 3-11) walked Dwight Smith, Jr. to load the bases. An infield single from K.C. Hobson gave the Fisher Cats the lead, scoring Berti, at 2-1. A sac fly from Matt Newman made it 3-1 before Smith, Jr. scored on a throwing error to build a 4-1 lead. The inning saw four runs (three earned), with three infield singles, three walks, a wild pitch, sac fly, and an error.
The rest of the Fisher Cats runs were more traditional. Pompey tripled with two outs in the fourth, and then scored on a Berti single for a 5-1 lead. In the sixth, Berti drew a two-out walk before jogging home on Smith, Jr.'s fourth home run of the season.
Lawrence (W; 9-8) left the game at that point, leading 7-1. He allowed one run, gave up five hits, and tied his season high with six strikeouts. Over his last six starts, he has posted a 2.03 ERA (9 ER/40.0 IP).
The top three in the batting order - Pompey, Berti, and Smith, Jr. - combined for five hits, six runs, and four RBI. The trio reached base ten times to pace the victory. Pompey pushed his on-base streak to 42 games while Berti extended his hitting streak to a season-high ten in a row.
The series continues on Friday with a celebration of 30 years of Back to the Future. Fans can see a tribute DeLorean as well as Marty McFly's pick-up truck from the movies. There will be a 50s-style performance by Doo-Wop Deville before the game, as well as a happy hour in the Sam Adams Bar & Grill until game time. It's also Ford Day with an Atlas Fireworks show presented by New England Ford. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling 603-641-2005, and by visiting the stadium box office.
The pitching match-up on Friday night has Taylor Cole (4-7, 4.19) on the hill against Portland's Danny Rosenbaum (0-2, 7.00). Tom Gauthier and Bob Lipman have the radio call beginning at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
