Two Runs in 6th provide cheer for Fightins

The Reading Fightin Phils (49-42) two runs in the bottom of the sixth turned a lump of coal into a prized jewel as they defeated the New Britain Rock Cats (44-46) 3-1 on Thursday night. The Fightin Phils didn't get their first hit of the game until the bottom of the fifth inning.

Reinier Roibal left the game after two innings due to injury. Ethan Martin entered the game in the top of the third inning. New Britain scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning as Jordan Patterson hit a RBI groundout to score Pat Valaika. Rock Cats would take a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.

Ethan Martin logged three innings in relief as he allowed just one run off four hits with one strikeout. Reading finally got to Rock Cats starter Matt Flemer (4-6) in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Pointer led off the inning with a walk then JP Crawford flew out to left field. Kelly Dugan tied the game at 1-1 with a RBI triple then scored on a sacrifice fly by Brock Stassi that gave Reading a 2-1 lead. Andrew Knapp extended his hitting streak to 14 games in the following at-bat with a triple.

Colton Murray (2-1) logged two innings in relief as he gave up just one hit with two strikeouts. Ryan O'Sullivan added a scoreless top of the eighth inning with two strikeouts. The Fightin Phils scored another run in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 3-1 lead as Brian Pointer scored off an error by Jayson Langfels.

Stephen Shackleford earned his 20th save by recording two strikeouts in the top of the ninth and retiring the side.

The Fightin Phils and Rock Cats are back at it on Friday night. First pitch is at 7:05 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:05 pm. Fans will be able to view the game on MiLB.tv beginning at 7:05 pm.
