Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

SALISBURY, MD - Drew Turbin had a chance to win the game in the bottom of the ninth inning, but squandered his chance to be the hero when he grounded out to second base. Fortunately for Turbin, he got a second chance.

Turbin redeemed himself in the 11th with a walk-off win on a long hit to the right-center field warning track. Turbin's winner lifted the Shorebirds (20-15) to a series win against the cellar-dwelling Greensboro Grasshoppers in a 3-2 ball on Sunday afternoon at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The walk-off win was Delmarva's second of the season.

But if it wasn't for Steve Laurino, Turbin may have never gotten his opportunity. After belting his first homer of the season in the fifth inning, Laurino's RBI single off of Ben Holmes in the ninth inning tied the game at 2-2 and forced extras. Holmes entered the game with a 0.32 ERA in 28.0 innings pitched, the lowest ERA across all levels of Minor League Baseball. Laurino finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with a double, home run and two RBI in recording his second three hit-game and second multi-RBI game of the campaign.

Cristian Alvarado had an up-and-down afternoon, allowing two runs in five innings on five base hits. Alvarado struck out five and walked three in receiving a no-decision. He only needed 22 pitches to get through the first two innings, but he through 65 pitches over the next three frames. Alvarado leads the Shorebirds with 45 strikeouts this season.

Greensboro's (12-24) only two runs came across in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from from Anfernee Seymour and a RBI single from Josh Naylor.

Garrett Cleavinger (4-0) earned the win after coming on in the top of the 11th inning. He struck out the side on 14 pitches. Jeff Kinley (0-2) took the loss for Greensboro in 1.2 innings of relief.

The Shorebirds continue a nice start to the season, with a series record of 6-3-1 half way to the all-star break. Delmarva improves to 6-0 in Sunday games and 6-2 in day games in 2016.

Delmarva opens a three game set with the West Virginia Power on Monday night at 7:05 pm. The Power are the Class A Affiliates of the Pittsburgh Pirates. West Virginia has the league's best pitching staff this season, holding a 3.03 ERA through 35 games. But the Power have struggled on offense, leading only Greensboro with a .229 team batting average. Reid Love (2-2, 3.90) gets the ball in the series opener for Ryan Minor's club. Brendan Gulick will have the broadcast beginning with Shorebirds On-Deck at 6:50 pm on Fox Sports AM 960 and online at theshorebirds.com.
