Hagerstown Suns News Release
HAGERSTOWN, MD The Hagerstown Suns (23-12) took on the Kannapolis Intimidators (16-20) in game the final game of their four game series in South Atlantic league play in front of 2,310 fans on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium.
If there is one thing pitchers that come into Municipal Stadium do not want to see, its Matthew Page coming up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth with a chance to win the game and that exact scenario happened today.
Matt Page came up to the plate with two outs and Ian Sagdal on second base. Ian reached base on a walk by Taylore Cherry (0-1). Cherry then gave Sagdal second due to a balk. Kelvin Gutierrez flew out to right and gave Page the opportunity to win the game for the Suns. Page worked a 1-1 count, then hit a change up into shallow left field. Sagdal was not stopping around third but there was no play at the plate because the ball was missed played by Kannapolis left fielder Landon Lassiter.
The scoring was opened up by Max Schrock in the bottom of the first inning when he lead off the Suns half with his second home run of the season. The suns added one more run in the third when Sagdal scored on the Rett Wiseman SAC fly.
The middle innings were taken over by Kannapolis. They scored 4 runs between the second and fifth innings off of Antionio Rodriguez, Cody Daily and Landon Lassiter RBI hits.
The biggest defensive play of the day was when Cody Daily, for Kannapolis, tried to score from first base on the Michale Suiter double. Suns right fielder Rhett Wiseman fielded the ball at the base of the right field wall and threw it into his cut-off Max Schrock. He then threw a perfect ball from shallow right field to throw out Suiter at the plate.
The Suns then scored three runs in the eighth off of Kannapolis reliever Brennon Easterling, who was given the blown save.
With the game tied up in the top of the eighth inning reliever Luis Torres for the Suns put the9,1,2 hitters down in order, then did the same to their 3,4,5 hitters in the top of the ninth.
In the bottom of the ninth, Schrock lead off with a pop-out to left field, Sagdal reached on a walk and advanced to second on a balk from Taylor Cherry. Gutierrez flew out then Page won the game with a final score of 6-5.
Matthew DeRosier got the start for the Suns. He went 4.1 innings giving up 6 hits, 4 earned runs, 4 walks and struck out 4. Mick VanVossen and Torres combined to throw 4.2 two hit and one run innings to close out the game. Luis Torres was given the win.
The Suns send out Andrew Lee (2-0, 1.54) to face Lakewood's Jose Taveras (1-2, 2.28) in game one of four at Municipal Stadium. First pitch is at 7:05pm.
