Greenville Drive News Release

Augusta, GA - Despite falling behind 8-1 after five innings on Sunday afternoon, the Greenville Drive refused to pack it in, storming right back into the game and using ninth-inning heroics from Joseph Monge to stun the Augusta GreenJackets 11-10 in the series finale.

After the GreenJackets (16-20) took a 10-9 lead in the bottom of the eighth, the Drive (18-17) came right back in the ninth. Jeremy Rivera drew a leadoff walk, and Joseph Monge came through with a two-run homer to left field off Ryan Halstead (0-2) to put the Drive ahead for good, and Bobby Poyner made that lead stand in the bottom half to notch his seventh save.

The Drive plated a run on an error in the first, but the GreenJackets erupted for eight runs over the next five innings, with five of them coming against Drive starter Marc Brakeman. RBI singles by Dylan Davis and Gustavo Cabrera put Augusta ahead 2-1 in the first, and a three-run homer by Miguel Gomez in the third pushed the score to 5-1.

Augusta scored three more in the fifth to make the score 8-1, and the Drive roared back in the sixth against Connor Kaden with six runs to cut the lead to one. Following an RBI single by Rivera and a bases-loaded walk by Luis Alejandro Basabe, Mitchell Gunsolus unloaded for a grand slam to right-field, his second grand slam of the week and his fifth homer of the year.

The Drive took the lead in the seventh when Austin Rei scored on an error and Monge delivered a sacrifice fly, but the GreenJackets scored single runs in the seventh and eighth to take the lead back. An RBI triple by Lucius Fox tied the game at 9-9 in the seventh, and in the next half, Davis doubled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Victor Diaz (1-3) received the victory after throwing two innings of relief for the Drive.

Gunsolus went 4-6 to lead Greenville's 18-hit afternoon, while Monge added three hits and three RBI on his big day. Basabe, Rivera, Roldani Baldwin and Chad De La Guerra all chipped in with two hits apiece.

The Drive return to Fluor Field on Monday night at 7:05 PM to begin a seven-game homestand. The first three games of the homestand are against the Charleston RiverDogs, affiliate of the New York Yankees, as part of the Battle of the Palmetto State presented by Spinx.
