Chesapeake Baysox News Release

The Baysox posted another late rally against the Reading bullpen, but once again fell short as the Phillies shut the door with the tying run at the plate to win 5-3. The loss was the Baysox third straight defeat and drops them to 6-9 on the season, six and a half games behind division leading Akron.

Reading got on the board first with a two out rally in the bottom of the second. Neil Sellers singled to left off Baysox starter Bobby Livingston and Tuffy Goeswisch followed with an RBI double to give the Phillies a 1-0 lead. Livingston pitched well for the second straight outing but took the loss again despite allowing one earned run on six hits over six innings while walking two and striking out two.

Phillies starter Antonio Bastardo carried a perfect game into the fifth inning before Baysox left fielder Jonathan Tucker reached on an error by shortstop Ozzie Chavez. Bastardo finished the inning before handing it over to the bullpen, not allowing a hit or a walk over his five innings of work while striking out three.

The Baysox got things going in the seventh against the Reading bullpen. Designated hitter Brandon Snyder laced a one out single to right in the top of the seventh. Right fielder Ambiorix Concepcion grounded a ball back to the pitcher, but Phillies reliever Alex Concepcion threw the ball away allowing both runners to advance into scoring position for Jonathan Tucker. Concepcion threw the ball away again, this time uncorking a wild pitch to score Snyder and tie the game at one apiece.

The Phillies answered back in the bottom of the inning off Baysox lefty Chad Thall. Mike Spidale lined a double to right field with one out. One batter latter, Quintin Berry singled to left to score Spidale and put them back on top at 2-1.

The Baysox responded again, this time a two out rally off Reading righty Josh Shortslef. First baseman Melvin Dorta singled to left and center fielder Dave Krynzel followed with a single of his own. Second baseman Paco Figueroa made it three straight hits by lacing a single of his own to score Dorta and tie the game at two. Figueroa continued his hot hitting for the Baysox, posting a .327 average and a .935 OPS on the season.

Thall ran into trouble again in the eighth inning, as Michael Taylor led off the inning with a triple to right off the Baysox left-hander. Thall walked Brian Stavisky and one batter latter walked Neil Sellers to load the bases for Tuffy Gosewisch. Thall retired Gosewisch on a pop up, but Mike Spidale followed with another triple to right, clearing the bases and putting the Phillies up for good. Spidale came into the game mired in an 0-12 slump but finished the night 4-4 and a home run shy of the cycle.

The Baysox tried to get back in it in the ninth, as they brought the tying run to the plate with two outs against Reading closer Sergio Escalona. After uncorking the second run scoring wild pitch of the game, Escalona got shortstop Robert Valido to ground out to short to end the game and hand the Baysox their third straight loss.

The two teams close out the series tomorrow as RHP Sean Gleason (0-1, 11.25) makes his second Baysox start against RHP Tyson Brummett (1-1, 2.55) for Reading. Game time is set for 1:05.
