New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- David Cooper had a season-high three hits and three runs scored to lead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 7-2 victory over the Binghamton Mets on Saturday afternoon at Merchantsauto.com Stadium. Luis Sanchez added two hits, two runs, and an RBI, and Fabio Castro registered seven strikeouts over five-plus innings to earn his second win of the season.
New Hampshire (11-5) took a 1-0 lead against losing pitcher Eric Brown in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back doubles from Cooper (3-for-4, 2B, 3 R) and Nick Gorneault (2-for-3, 2 2B, BB, RBI, R).
The Fisher Cats erupted for four more runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth inning against Brown (1-1). Adam Calderone (1-for-3, SF, R, 2 RBI) and Sanchez (2-for-3, 2B, RBI, 2 R) delivered run-scoring singles, with Calderone scoring on a throwing error by Emmanuel Garcia. Sean Shoffit (1-for-3, 3B, RBI) capped the inning by ripping the Fishers' first triple of the season off the leftfield fence, plating Sanchez for a 5-0 lead.
That was enough for Castro (2-0), who yielded two runs on four hits, a walk and a hit batsman in his five innings of work. The left-hander saw his season-long scoreless stretch snapped at 21.2 innings when Ruben Tejada (1-for-2, 2B, R, HBP) led off the sixth inning with a double and scored on a run-scoring single from Garcia (1-for-4, RBI, R) that ended Castro's afternoon.
Garcia would eventually score when reliever David Shinskie induced a double-play ground out from Lucas Duda (0-for-3, BB), trimming the Fisher Cats' lead to 5-2.
Sanchez doubled off B-Mets' reliever Adam Bostick in the bottom of the seventh inning and came around to score on a single by Brian Jeroloman (1-for-4, RBI), giving New Hampshire a 6-2 lead. Calderone's sacrifice fly off Julio De La Cruz in the bottom of the eighth inning drove in Cooper for the game's final run.
Shinskie turned in three shutout innings out of the bullpen, holding Binghamton (8-6) to one hit and one walk.
Nate Starner closed it out with a scoreless ninth inning, giving the Fisher Cats their eighth win in their last 10 games.
The Fisher Cats and the Mets wrap up their four-game series Sunday afternoon at 1:05pm when New Hampshire left-hander Luis Perez (2-1, 2.65) takes on Binghamton left-hander Mike Antonini (2-0, 4.30). Radio coverage begins with the BayRing Pre-Game Show at 12:45pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Mike Murphy and Bob Lipman.
