The Battle of Marathon...The Aeros and Curve locked horns for more than six hours in their doubleheader last night, with Akron taking game one 3-2 in nine innings and Altoona rallying late for an 8-5 triumph in game two. The affair took so long that Aeros skipper Mike Sarbaugh aged a year...literally. By the time the final out was recorded in game two the clock read 12:09 a.m. on April 25th, ensuring that Sarbaugh reached his 42nd birthday before he got back to the clubhouse. Game one was completed in a civilized 2:28 (all the more impressive when you consider that the teams played nine innings), while the nightcap stretched to stamina-sapping 3:00 (to play only seven innings).
Game One...Steven Wright threw a gem in game one and departed in line for his second win of the season, but Altoona rallied to tie the game with a run in the top of the seventh off closer Vinnie Pestano. The Aeros bailed out Pestano in the ninth however, as CF John Drennen walked with one out and scored all the way from first on RF Mickey Hall's game-winning RBI double to left-center. It was Akron's first extra-innings game of the year. Randy Newsom (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings in game one for the win, while Altoona's Jean Machi (1-1) took the loss in relief. DH Jose Constanza led the offensive charge with a 3-4 performance, while Hall had two hits for the second straight game. Wright turned in his first quality start of the season with six innings of one-run baseball, but Pestano suffered his first blown save (he had been six-for-six in save chances) and also allowed his first run of the year.
Game Two...The Aeros were in good shape again in game two, as Drennen's two-run triple in the bottom of the fifth pushed Akron in front at 5-4 and the Aeros then went to the seventh just three outs from sweeping a doubleheader for the second time in three games. Altoona roared back with four runs in the seventh however (three off newcomer Josh Judy), with Jason Delaney's two-run triple putting the Curve in front for good and RBI hits from Brad Corley and Angel Gonzalez providing insurance. Eric Krebs (1-2) was the winner in game two as Judy (0-1) allowed three runs in 1.2 innings in his Eastern League debut. Drennen and SS Niuman Romero both drove in two runs in game two.
Rest for the Weary...Akron made a roster move today to shore up their bullpen, getting RHP Paolo Espino from Class A Lake County to provide depth to the relief corps. Espino had appeared in four games for the Captains (one start), going 1-1 with a 6.48 ERA, and highlighted by 10 strikeouts in just 8.1 innings. RHP Steven Wright has been moved to Mahoning Valley to make room for Espino, as the Aeros just try to get through these next two games before a badly needed off day Monday. Akron pitching has thrown 39.0 innings in the last three days, with the bullpen covering 19 of those frames.
