Late Scoring Opportunity Goes Amiss in Shutout Loss

May 10, 2022 - Eastern League (EL)
Harrisburg Senators News Release

The Senators had the tying runs on base in the ninth inning but came up empty in their 2-0 loss Tuesday night to the Richmond Flying Squirrels. The Sens twice had a leadoff double but couldn't push a run across the plate. Ronald Herrera was the tough luck loser allowing just a single run.

Herrera struck out seven and walked one in his six frames. He allowed four hits and just one run. Reid Schaller pitched a one-two-three seventh for the Senators with a strikeout. Alex Troop allowed a run on two hits in the eighth and Dakody Clemmer pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.

Offensively the Senators had just five hits. Mitch Longo led the first inning off with a double but was stranded at third. Jake Alu led the fourth inning off but was left at second. Jackson Cluff had a two-out double in the fifth but was left stranded. Alu was at third after a single and stolen base and was left stranded to end the sixth. Harrisburg put two on with one out in the ninth, but the game ended on a double play.

It was the second time in three games the Sens were shutout. It's also the third straight homerless game. The Senators turned a double play in eighth inning to avert a bigger Richmond inning.

The Senators and Richmond Flying Squirrels play game two of their six-game series Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at FNB Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports Radio Harrisburg 96.5FM 95.3FM and 1400AM beginning at 6:20 p.m.
