Late Rally Lifts Hooks over Missions

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Luis Castro's two-run single in the seventh jumped the Corpus Christi Hooks ahead of the San Antonio Missions, and the home team held on for the 4-3 win before a great crowd of 6,212 at Whataburger Field.
Despite 11 hits by the Missions, they stranded nine runners on base including seven across the first three frames. Two swings did the damage for the Hooks, as an Anthony Sherwin two-run homer combined with Castro's hit provided the offense and the victory for Corpus Christi.
Henry Bàez got the start for San Antonio, and he looked sharp early. He retired the first six Hooks batters, including four via strikeouts. However, he ran into trouble in the third when Sherwin knocked an opposite-field two-run homer to left field, giving Corpus Christi a 2-0 advantage headed into the fourth inning.
Like they have throughout the early 2025 campaign, the Missions responded right away. Kai Murphy doubled, and Tyler Robertson put down a bunt single to cover the corners with no one out against Hooks starter James Hicks. That's when Anthony Vilar lofted a double off the glove of Ryan Wrobleski in left field that got away from him and brought the tying runs home. The red-hot Marcos Castañon followed by poking a single into center field, lifting the Missions ahead 3-2.
Bàez got through four frames and kept the lead in hand, passing the game to Josè Geraldo. He struck out three in two scoreless frames.
Jake Higginbotham replaced Geraldo, and two leadoff walks came back to hurt him and the Missions. Higginbotham left the game with those two runners in scoring position after recording just one out, leaving the jam for David Morgan. On Morgan's first pitch, Castro struck a two-run single into left field to give the Hooks the 4-3 lead.
That lead proved to be enough. Tyler Guilfoil recorded seven outs in relief, including three strikeouts, while walking only one batter to close the game and clinch the win for Corpus Christi.
