Tri-City ValleyCats News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - The Tri-City ValleyCats scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning, but lost their final regular season road contest 8-7 to the Staten Island Yankees on Friday night, in Staten Island, N.Y.
One night after the 'Cats earned a 6-1 extra-innings win to clinch the 2015 New York-Penn League Title, the Yankees got on the board first, by scoring two runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Despite the early deficit, Tri-City managed to fight back, scoring once in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Hector Roa, before tacking on three runs in the top of the fifth.
Anthony Hermelyn got the offense started in that frame with a leadoff single to center field. He then advanced to second on a hit by Cesar Carrasco, before scoring on a bunt by Keach Ballard that Staten Island pitcher Luis Cedeno threw into right field for an error.
Three batters later, Aaron Mizell smacked a 3-2 pitch from Cedeno off of the right field wall for a two-out, two-run double that scored Carrasco and Ballard, giving the 'Cats a 4-2 lead.
Unfortunately, the Yankees rebounded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, and three in the eighth, to take a 8-4 advantage into the top of the ninth.
With one out in the final frame, Ballard walked on a 3-2 pitch to reach first, then advanced to second when Alexander Melendez reached on a Staten Island error, before Roa loaded the bases with a single to right field.
After Mizell drove home Ballard with a RBI ground out, Bobby Wernes plated Melendez and Roa with a two-run single to center field, bringing Tri-City within one run.
That was as close as the 'Cats would get, however, as Staten Island reliever Travis Hissong came into the game and retired Dexture McCall to hand Tri-City the defeat.
Offensively, Wernes led the 'Cats by going 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Carrasco (2-for-4 with a run scored), and McCall (2-for-5) also posted multi-hit nights.
Also enjoying strong nights at the plate were Ballard, who went 1-2 with three runs scored, and Mizell who drove in three RBI's in the game.
The ValleyyCats will now look to continue their string of strong offensive performances when they return to Joseph L. Bruno Stadium at 7 p.m., on Saturday, to begin a three-game set against the Connecticut Tigers.
