-SPIKES RETURN TO CONTINUE LAST HOME STRETCH: The State College Spikes have four games remaining and now stand a game back of the top in the New York-Penn League Wild Card standings. Tonight, the Spikes continue their 10th Season with the finale of a three-game series against the Batavia Muckdogs at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The matchup continues a five-game homestand for the Spikes to conclude the regular season home slate. State College is currently a game back of West Virginia for first in the Wild Card standings, and the Spikes have gone 6-5 against the Muckdogs this season, including a series win at home July 18-20. Tonight marks the 102st meeting all-time between the two clubs, with the all-time series sititng at 51-50 in favor of State College.
-LAST GAME: Ronnierd Garcia collected three hits to lead the State College Spikes' offense, and the Spikes took a 5-2 victory over the Batavia Muckdogs on Thursday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Garcia's two-run single in the fifth inning finalized the scoring in the game, and the Spikes third baseman also added a double and scored a run. Casey Grayson put State College on the board in the third inning with an RBI groundout. Michael Massi's single and a groundout by Thomas Spitz each brought in a runner in the fourth inning to give the Spikes the lead for good. Josh Wirsu earned his first win on the hill for the Spikes. Wirsu allowed two runs, one earned, on a total of five hits, a walk and a hit batsman over five-plus innings of work. The right-hander also struck out three batters. Pedro Echemendia allowed just one hit in a four-out save, and is now just one save shy of the Spikes' single-season record of 12, set in 2007 by Ronald Uviedo.
-EVANS STARTS FOR SPIKES: State College left-hander Jacob Evans gets his sixth start of the season with the Spikes and 16th overall apperance as he takes the hill tonight. Evans had been dominant throughout the 2015 season, his first as a pro, before allowing 10 runs over two-thirds of an inning on Sunday in Mahoning Valley. The Oklahoma product will look to bounce back at home, where he is 1-0 with a 0.69 ERA and has not allowed a run over his last nine innings of work. Evans was the sixth-round draft choice of the Cardinals this year, and has recorded 33 strikeouts to just seven walks.
-BAUTISTA GETS BALL FOR MUCKDOGS: Batavia left-hander Nestor Bautista will make his third start of the year for the Muckdogs tonight, and first since June 26, after a change in the rotation. Bautista made the New York-Penn League All-Star Game after posting a 1.86 ERA through his first nine appearances, including three relief wins. However, the New York City native, who was chosen by the Marlins in the 32nd round of the 2014 MLB Draft, has posted a 6.00 ERA over his last four appearances. Bautista got the win against West Virginia last time out despite giving up four runs over 3 1/3 innings.
-MARTIN EARNS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD: Spikes Athletic Trainer Dan Martin has been named the New York-Penn League Athletic Trainer of the Year by the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society (PBATS). The award is given annually to one member of each of the 16 leagues in Minor League Baseball, as well as one award for the Dominican Summer League, with an additional award is given to the Minor League Coordinator of the Year. Martin is now eligible for the Minor League Trainer of the Year award as well, which will be given at the 2015 Winter Meetings in Nashville, TN.
-GRAYSON GOING BACK TO THE TOP: Spikes infielder Casey Grayson now has two homers and two triples to go with his team-leading 17 doubles this season. Grayson is now fourth in the New York-Penn League in batting average with a .308 mark, and his .418 on-base percentage places him second in the league behind Bobby Wernes of Tri-City. The University of Houston product is second in the NYPL with 72 hits, and is tops in the loop with 45 walks.
-SPIKE MARKS: Pedro Echemendia is first in the NYPL with 25 appearances, and is fourth in saves with 11...Echemendia also leads the Spikes with six wins on the mound, and his 11 saves are the most for any Spikes pitcher since Ronald Uviedo posted a franchise record 12 saves in 2007...The Spikes added catcher Chris Chinea from Rookie-level Johnson City after the Appalachian League season ended Tuesday...Chinea hit .301 with six homers and 27 RBI this year
