Vermont Falls 6-4 To Hudson Valley In Home Finale On Friday

BURLINGTON, VT --- Hudson Valley first baseman Hector Montes went 5-for-5 including an RBI single to snap a 4-4 tie in the sixth inning as the Renegades handed the Lake Monsters a 6-4 loss in the New York-Penn League home finale for Vermont at historic Centennial Field on Friday night.

Hudson Valley had jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in the second inning on an Jose Paez RBI double, the third on an Oscar Sanay RBI single and two runs in the fourth on a Danny De la Calle RBI triple and Josepht Astacio RBI single. All four runs (three earned) came off Vermont starter Angel Duno, who allowed eight hits over five innings with no walks and nine strikeouts.

The nine strikeouts for Duno were the most by a Lake Monsters pitcher this season and the most by a Vermont pitcher at Centennial Field since September 3, 2013 when Brent Powers struckout nine in a 2-0 win over Staten Island.

Vermont responded with a four-run bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game 4-4. Seth Brown got the rally started with a one-out single and scored on booming RBI double to centerfield by Chris Iriart, who scored on a two-out Ske Bolt RBI single to left. Ryan Howell followed with a two-run, game-tying home run to leftfield to tie the game 4-4. It was Howell's team-leading fifth home run of the season and Vermont's 36th homer overall (tying for fifth-most in home runs in history).

Lake Monsters reliever Cody Kurz (0-4) retired the first two Hudson Valley batters in the sixth inning, but a walk and bunt single put two runners on board before Montes lined a single to centerfield to score Sanay with the go ahead run. The Rengades added an insurance run in the seventh on a Nic Wilson RBI singe to left.

Montes singled in all five of his at bats in the first, third, fifth, sixth and eighth innings, while Astacio and Sanay both had two hits and an RBI for a combined 9-for-14 by the top three batters in the Hudson Valley lineup. Renegades reliever Tim Ingram (2-1) allowed twohits over three scoreless innings for the win, while Reece Karalus struckout the final five Vermont batters in two perfect innings to earn his third save.

Iriart was 2-for-4 with his 17th double of the season for Vermont (31-41), which finishes the year with a 19-20 record at Centennial Field including wins in 11 of their last 16 home games. The Lake Monsters have three games remaining in their 2015 season with a three-game series at Lowell Saturday at 7:05 pm, Sunday at 3:05 pm and the season finale Monday at 1:05 pm.
