Black Bears Fall 2-0 to Williamsport in Home Finale

The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated 2-0 by the Williamsport Crosscutters in the last regular season home game at Monongalia County Ballpark on Friday night. With the loss, the Black Bears fall to an overall record of 39-34 this season. West Virginia is now tied with State College for the lead in the New York-Penn League standings.

The Crosscutters scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a ground ball hit to first base by Venn Biter. The teams were each held scoreless until the eighth inning when Williamsport added on an insurance run on a double to right by Josh Tobias.

The Black Bears were held scoreless on Friday night but had two hitters finish with a great night at the plate. C Christian Kelley went 2-for-3 with a walk while 3B Ke'Byran Hayes registered his first multi-hit game as a Black Bear, finishing the night 2-for-4.

SP Bret Helton had one of his best performances of the season despite being saddled with the loss (2-6). The right-hander pitched 4.0 innings, allowing only two hits and one run while striking out four hitters. RP's Cesilio Pimentel, Tanner Anderson and Daniel Zamora pitched the final 5.0 innings of the game, allowing only one run out of the bullpen.

West Virginia will now travel to Mahoning Valley to take on the Scrappers in the final series of the regular season beginning on Saturday, September 5 with a first pitch of 7:05 p.m. The Black Bears are currently tied for the lead in the Wild Card standings and if they clinch playoff berth, there will be a home playoff game on Wednesday, September 9.
