Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT-The Connecticut Tigers (34-36) closed out the home portion of their regular season schedule with a 4-3 win on Friday over the Brooklyn Cyclones (33-40).

With 5,832, the second largest crowd of the season, on hand the Tigers scored single runs in three of the first four innings to take a 3-0 lead against Brooklyn starter Kevin Canelon. Second basemen Pat Mackenzie (3-4, 2 RBI, R) started the bottom of the first with a base hit. After moving to second on a wild pitch he scored on whacky play. Designated hitter Corey Baptist (2-4) singled to shallow right with two-outs in the inning. It appeared as if Mackenzie was going to get hung up between third and home but a poor throw to home by first basemen Jose Garcia allowed the run to score.

In the second shortstop Keaton Jones walked and stole second. He later scored on a base knock by Mackenzie. The lead extended to three in the fourth as Mackenzie came through again with an RBI single plating catcher Shane Zeile (1-2, R) after he singled to lead off the inning.

Canelon went the first five innings for Brooklyn. He allowed three runs on six hits while striking out six and walking two. He leads the league in strikeouts.

Chase Edwards started the game for Connecticut and cruised through the first five. However, in the sixth he got into trouble. Right fielder (2-4, R) singled to start the inning and after a walk to centerfielder Desmond Lindsay and a single by Garcia the bases were loaded. The next batter was catcher Brandon Brosher (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and he cleared the bases with a double to left tying the score at 3-3.

Edwards was lifted and Matt Davenport (1-0) replaced him. Davenport got the final two outs and went on to throw two and two thirds innings of shut out baseball. He didn't allow a hit and struck out three as he picked up the win.

Connecticut retook the lead against Ruben Reyes (1-1) in the bottom of the sixth. After entering the game for Zeile catcher Franklin Navarro walked to lead off the inning and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of third basemen Steven Fuentes that lifted the score to 4-3.

Jack Fischer (SV 2) closed the door for Connecticut firing a perfect ninth with a strikeout.

With the doors closing on the 2015 home slate at Dodd Stadium the Connecticut Tigers set a new single-season attendance record as they welcomed in 78,588 fans this season.

Connecticut will play the first game of a three game series tomorrow on the road at Tri-City. The first pitch tomorrow is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
