Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters dropped their fourth-straight game and second-consecutive in the second half, falling to Southern Maryland 2-1 in front of 6,327 fans at Constellation Field. The Skeeters fall to 37-36 overall and 1-2 in the second half after tonight's setback.
Both starting pitchers were dominant in the first half of the ball game. Sean Gallagher held the Blue Crabs to three hits through the first four innings, but the offense was unable to string consecutive hits together against Southern Maryland starter, Brian Burres. The Blue Crabs struck first in the top of the fifth after Jamar Walton started the inning with a single to right-center. Anthony Vega laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Walton to second before a groundout moved the Blue Crabs' left fielder to third. Fred Lewis singled over the head of newcomer, Renny Osuna at second, allowing Walton to score the first run of the contest, 1-0.
The Skeeters snapped a 14-inning scoreless streak in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Wallace doubled deep to the left-center alley to open the frame. Johan Limonta dropped down a beautiful sacrifice bunt to move Wallace to third. After joining the club moments before first pitch, Osuna poked an RBI single through a drawn-in infield to score Wallace and give the second baseman an RBI against his former team to tie the game.
Southern Maryland reclaimed the lead off Gallagher in the top of the seventh. Jake Opitz reached on a single, but was caught stealing second following a strikeout of Walton. Vega hit a two-out double off the wall in left and Frawley hit a shallow double down the right field line, just out of reach of Kevin Russo, allowing Frawley to come in and give the Blue Crabs the lead going to the seventh-inning stretch.
The Blue Crabs added a trio of runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach for Sugar Land. Opitz doubled down the left field line against Adrian Martin to open the frame. Following a flyout and an intentional walk, Frawley hit a grounder to third, but the Skeeters were unable to turn the double play on an errant throw to first, allowing Opitz to cross the plate. Lewis hit a triple into the left-center alley before coming in to score on a Casey Stevenson single into right, increasing the lead to 5-1.
Patrick Palmeiro blasted a solo home run to the Wells Fargo Picnic Plaza in left off Erik Hamren to cut the score to 5-2, but the offense was unable to push across anymore, dropping the contest.
