
Blue Crabs Continue Hitting Ways to Defeat Skeeters

(Sugar Land, TX. July 11th 2015) --- Southern Maryland continued their hitting ways tonight, as they banged out 11 hits and scored five runs to defeat the Sugar Land Skeeters by the 5-2 final.
Both teams were held scoreless until the top of the fifth inning, where Southern Maryland scored the first run of the game. Jamar Walton led off with a single. Anthony Vega then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and Casey Frawley grounded out to move Walton to third. With two out, Fred Lewis lashed a single to center to score Walton to make it 1-0.
Sugar Land provided an answer in the bottom of the sixth. Chris Wallace led off with a double. Two batters later, Renny Osuna banged a single to right to score Wallace to tie the game at 1-1.
Southern Maryland retook the lead in the top of the seventh. After Jake Optiz led things off with a single, he was thrown out trying to steal second. With two outs, Anthony Vega doubled, and the next hitter Casey Frawley traded places with him, doubling to right center to score Vega to make it 2-1 Blue Crabs.
The Blue Crabs added three insurance runs in the top of the ninth. Jake Opitz led off with a rocket double to right center. Two batters later, Anthony Vega was intentionally walked to put two runners on. Opitz then scored on an error by the second baseman Renny Osuna. Fred Lewis then drove in Frawley with a triple. The next hitter Casey Stevenson singled to center to score Lewis to make it 5-1.
The Skeeters added a run in the bottom of the ninth on a Patrick Palmeiro solo homrun, but were held scoreless the rest of the way to bring the final to a 5-2 Blue Crabs victory. Fred Lewis went 3-4 out of the leadoff spot, driving in two runs. Fred is now nine for his last 14 in the last three games combined. LHP Brian Burres picked up the victory on the mound, going six innings, allowing a run on eight hits, and striking out three. His counterpart Sean Gallagher suffered the loss, going seven innings, allowing two runs, on eight hits.
Renny Osuna was traded to the Skeeters right before the ballgame, and was in the starting lineup playing second base. Batting in the seventh spot in the order, Osuna went 2-4 with an RBI.
Game three of the series will commence tomorrow with a 5:05 P.M. first pitch. The Blue Crabs will be looking for their fourth sweep of the season. RHP Daryl Thompson (2-1, 1.77) will start for Southern Maryland, while LHP Roy Merritt (2-2, 1.29) will throw for Sugar Land.
