Late penalty shot goal sinks Lynx
March 24, 2006 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
Jeff Miles' penalty shot goal with just 51 seconds remaining in regulation broke a 3-3 deadlock and lifted the Columbia Inferno to victory over the Augusta Lynx Friday night.
Columbia jumped out to a 3-0 lead on goals by Jason Reimers, F.P. Guennette, and Craig Lazaruk before Nicolas Corbeil was able to get Augusta on the sheet with a pretty goal at 15:05. Brian Passmore sent Corbeil out through center after intercepting an Inferno pass at the Lynx line, working a 2-on-1 with Anthony Battaglia as his decoy. Corbeil toe-dragged the puck across the low slot, faking Chris Houle down to the ice and scoring on the backhand to make it 3-1.
After a glass delay forced both teams to call it a period with 4:24 remaining, the clubs headed back out onto the ice to no further scoring and a one minute break before starting the middle frame. There, Augusta would notch the only marker of the period on Ryan Lang's wrist shot over the left pad of Houle on a give-and-go feed from rookie Mike Erickson for his first pro point. Chris Leinweber also picked up a helper on the goal to send Augusta to the dressing room down 3-2 after two periods of play.
Corbeil's second goal of the night tied the game for Augusta and the contest looked to be headed to overtime, until the penalty shot was awarded with just 51 seconds remaining. Jason Wolfe threw his stick at the puck in desperation while the Inferno attacked, and Miles scored on the attempt for the game-winning goal.
The disappointing loss puts Augusta five points behind the Charlotte Checkers for the fifth place playoff spot, and still has the Lynx needing seven points to lock out the Inferno for the sixth and final playoff spot in the ECHL's American Conference Southern Division.
The teams return to Augusta for the rematch tomorrow night at 7:35 pm, with the Classic Stucco and Stone Pre-Game Show starting one half-hour before faceoff on your Home for Lynx Hockey, NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630. Tickets are on sale now through the team office at (706) 724-4ICE, through all TicketMaster locations, and on line at www.TicketMaster.com.
