Norfolk Admirals News Release
HERSHEY, PA - Late third period penalties doomed the Norfolk Admirals (16-5-4-1), as the Hershey Bears (16-3-3-3) got power play markers to tie the game with 2:32 left in the third period and to win the game in overtime by a 3-2 score on Saturday night at Giant Center.
The Admirals scored the first goal of the game with their first shot. Craig MacDonald and Reed Low entered the Hershey zone on an odd-man rush. MacDonald sent a puck from the right faceoff circle to Low at the opposite circle. Low sent a shot over the left shoulder of Hershey goaltender Frederic Cassivi for a 1-0 lead at 2:50 of the first period.
The Bears leveled the game at 1-1 with under five minutes left in the first period. Lawrence Nycholat sent a cross-crease pass to Kyle Wilson at the post to the left of Norfolk netminder Corey Crawford. Wilson converted the backdoor pass for a power play goal at 15:28.
After a scoreless second stanza, Norfolk took the lead midway through the third period after a lucky bounce went their way. Cam Barker dumped the puck from the neutral zone into the attacking zone along the right wing boards. Cassivi went behind the net in anticipation of playing the puck. However, the puck caromed off the corner dasher boards back into the slot. Troy Brouwer backhanded a shot into the net in front of a scrambling Cassivi for a power play goal at 12:14.
However, Hershey capitalized on the final two of seven power plays opportunities in the third period and overtime. The Bears tied the game late in the third period when Chad Wiseman's slapshot found the back of the net at 17:26.
Hershey won the game 1:07 into overtime when Eric Fehr one-timed a Lawrence Nycholat offering through a screen and past Crawford.
Crawford (44 shots, 41 saves) was strong in net but was saddled with the loss. Cassivi (24 shots, 22 saves) got the win.
The Admirals were 1-7 on the power play. Hershey was 3-12.
Norfolk and Hershey face off again tomorrow evening at Giant Center. The puck drops at 5:00.
