Binghamton blasts four first-period goals against Sound Tigers

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators jumped on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers early and often, as leading scorer Jeff Heerema collected two markers in the 5-2 victory Saturday night at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena.
Heerema buried his first marker at 1:29 of the first period, as he snapped a wrist shot past former Binghamton Senator Billy Thompson. Josh Hennessy and Arttu Luttinen assisted on the goal.
Just thirty second later, left wing Brian Maloney struck with his second marker of the week to give the Senators a 2-0 lead.
Arttu Luttinen gathered a loose puck and circled the Bridgeport goal, he then found a slashing Jeff Heerema moving towards the front of the net. Heerema slipped it past Thompson from the right post to extend the Senators lead to 3-0. Luttinen added his second helper of the night.
The Senators took advantage of their first power play of the night. Center Ryan Vesce's one-timer bounced off the goal post waist high, as Grant Potulny picked it out of the air and tap it past Thompson to give Binghamton a commanding 4-0 lead after the opening period.
The Sound Tigers struck back early in the second period with a man advantage, as Mike Sgroi was in the box for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Left winger Steve Regier blasted a slap shot from the left faceoff circle past Jeff Glass, making it a 4-1 contest.
Bridgeport followed that up with a short-handed tally by Chris Campoli at 14:49 of the third period, again a slap shot from the left circle.
Danny Bois closed out the scoring with his ninth marker of the year, an empty netter, with a minute to go in the game.
Heerema finished the game with three points (2+1=3), as the Senators leading goal scorer took first star honors on the night. Jeff Glass finished the night with 26 saves, as the 21-year-old earned his second victory of the season over Bridgeport.
Binghamton heads to Toronto for an afternoon showdown with the Toronto Marlies at 4:00 p.m.
