Hartford, CT - Rod Pelley recorded the first hat trick in Lowell Devils (13-11-2-1) history, pacing a 6-4 victory over the Hartford Wolf Pack (10-12-1-0) at the Hartford Civic Center Saturday night.
The Devils took the lead in the first period, scoring twice in the first 10 minutes of the game. Pelley started the scoring with his fourth of the season just 4:15 into the game. It snapped a 15-game goalless drought for the rookie out of Ohio State. Just over five minutes later Nicklas Bergfors made it 2-0 with his team-leading 10th of the season. Lowell held an 8-5 lead in shots in the first.
At 2:25 of the second period Lowell made it 3-0, with David Clarkson potting his fifth of the campaign and it looked as if the Devils had control of the game. But the Wolf Pack rebounded strong. Wolf Pack goals by Brandon Dubinsky at 7:26 on the power play and Dane Byers at 13:12 cut the Devils lead to just one goal after 40 minutes of play. Frank Doyle saw 11 shots in the second between the pipes for the Devils, trying to win his second straight start.
In the third period the Wolf Pack tied the game. Ryan Callahan notched his 17th goal of the season at 7:02 to make it 3-3 and give Hartford new life. That all changed, however, when Francis Lessard was issued a five-minute major penalty for boarding at 11:02, sending the Devils on the power play. They connected twice with the man advantage, with Justin Papineau scoring 37 seconds into the power play, and Pelley adding his second of the night at 15:53 to put the Devils back on top for good. A late Hartford goal with just 20 seconds left m! ade it a one-goal game again, but Pelley iced it with his third of the night, into the empty net in the waning seconds to make it a 6-4 final score.
The Devils play next Friday (Providence) and Saturday (Hartford) on the road and return home to host the Providence Bruins on Sunday, December 17th at 4:05 p.m. One lucky fan that night will win a trip for two to see the New Jersey Devils host the Boston Bruins in April, including an overnight stay in New Jersey and round-trip limo service, courtesy of Corporate Coach & Limousine.
