Lansing Lugnuts News Release
APPLETON, WI- Chris Colton had a clutch pinch-hit double in the eighth to tie the score and then came around on an error and passed ball later in the frame as Wisconsin(55-66, 24-28) sent Lansing(67-55, 29-23) to a 2-1 loss at Fox Cities Stadium, the second time in three games that the Lugnuts have failed to get 14 games over .500, something the franchise has never done.
After blasting four homers on Tuesday, Lansing got its 130th on the season when Tony McQuade went deep with one out in the first. It turned out to be the Lugnuts only run of the night as they managed seven hits off three Rattler pitchers. Brian Stitt gave up the homer to McQuade, but managed to strike out a career high 10 in six innings, earning a no-decision.
Billy Petrick took that 1-0 lead into the sixth, but departed when the Rattlers put runners on first and second. Sam Fischer took over and walked Michael Nesbit to load the bases, but then got Justin Ruchti popped up to second to end the inning. In all, Petrick fanned nine hitters, but like Stitt earned a no-decision.
The winning run came in the eighth. A one-out single by Michael Cox off Clay Rapada(6-5) started the rally, then Colton pinch-hit for Jeremy Dutton and ripped a game-tying double on a fastball. Nesbit would reach on an error by Uriak Marquez to send Colton to third and on the pitch that would walk Ruchti, a passed ball let Colton score the go-ahead run. It was a tough pill to swallow as Josh Womack would line into an inning-ending double play in the following at-bat.
Lansing threatened in the ninth as Kevin Collins led off with a single, but Jake Fox hit into a fielders choice. Drew Larsen took over for Fox on the bases and eventually got to third with two outs, but Michael Hrynio struck Anthony Granato out on a 3-2 pitch looking to end the game for his ninth save. Michael Ciccotelli(1-0) earned the win, pitching two shutout innings behind Stitt before yielding to Hrynio in the ninth.
The four-game series continues tomorrow night at 8:05 p.m. as Yorkin Ferreras goes for the Lugnuts against Brandon Moorhead.
