Dayton Dragons News Release

Peoria, IL– The Dayton Dragons (16-37, 43-80) looked to stop a franchise record tying seven game losing streak, before it became a franchise record eight game losing streak, Thursday night against the Peoria Chiefs (28-25, 66-56) at O'Brien Field. The Dragons tied it dramatically in the top of the ninth and took the lead in the top of the 11th, only to see Peoria extend the Dayton losing streak to a franchise record eight games with an 8-7 walk off win in 11 innings.

Dayton jumped out in front with a single tally in the top half of the second inning picking up a two out run off Chief starter Chris Lambert (ND). Habelito Hernandez picked up a one out single and moved to second on a stolen base. After a fly out to center field and a passed ball, Hernendez advanced to third. Tiago Campos got on the board with a bloop single down the line at first and the Dragons led 1-0.

Peoria tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning off Dragons starter Frankie Keller (ND). Anthony Monegan led off the inning with a walk moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a RBI double by Daric Barton. Barton continued his hot hitting against Dayton. Heading into action on Thursday against the Dragons, Barton was hitting.438, with one home run and eight RBI in five games against the Fire Breathers.

Dayton retook the lead off Lambert with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Walter Olmstead led the frame off with his third homer of the series and 14th of the season. The home run cleared the picnic section at the ball park beyond the wall in right center, traveling 390 feet. With one down Cody Strait tripled to the gap in left center field and would score on a SAC fly to center field by John Purdom to put the Dragons up 3-1.

Peoria tied things at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth off Keller on a RBI single from Jarrett Hoffpauir that scored Matt Dryer from second base. Dryer walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a base hit by Joe Mather. Mather advanced to third on Hoffpauir's hit and came home on a 1-6-3 double play.

The Chiefs added to the lead with a pair of runs off Dragons reliever Carlos Guevara (ND). Brendan Ryan who single and stole second base with one out in the fifth scored on a base hit by Barton and Peoria took a 4-3 lead. The lead grew to 5-3 in the sixth inning on a solo homer by Parker; his ninth of the season flew out in left center and put Peoria up by a pair.

After 1.1 innings of scoreless relief innings by David Shafer (ND), the Chiefs managed to pick up what looked like an insurance run off Dayton reliever Kyle Edens (ND). John-Paul Davis struck out but reached first base on a passed ball charged to Dragons catcher John Purdom. A base hit moved Davis to third and he would again advance, this time across the plate on another Purdom passed ball for a 6-3 Chiefs lead.

Dayton was all but done heading to the top of the ninth inning trailing by three runs at 6-3 and facing Chiefs closer Mark Worrell (ND). A one out walk put Will Hudson on first base. Worrell, allowed a two out single to Javon Moron to extend the inning for Ben Himes. The left hander crushed a Worrell offering off the batter's eye in center field for a three run home run and a 6-6 tie.

The tenth inning did not produce a run for either team and the 6-6 tie was intact heading into the 11th. With two down, Luis Bolivar went deep off Peoria reliever Brantley Jordan (W, 2-3) the solo shot gave Dayton a 7-6 lead and put the Miami Valley's team three outs from snapping a seven game losing streak.

Trey Rice (L, 3-4) came on to set down the Chiefs in the 10th and was three outs away from picking up the win. Two bloop singles and a fielder's choice had Peoria runners at first and third with two down and right hander Matt Dryer coming up. The Dragons brought in right hander Carlos Bohorquez (ND) to face pinch hitter Omar Pena. Pena gapped a triple into right center field scoring both runners that reached against Rice, giving Peoria a walk off 8-7 win.

The Dragons and Chiefs wrap up the four game series on Friday at O'Brien Field. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 7:OO PM; the first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM. LHP Joe Wilson makes the start for Dayton, while Peoria will send RHP Stuart Pomeranz to the mound.
