Burlington Bees News Release
Clinton, IA- Ambiorix Burgos struck out a career-high 13 in six hitless innings leading the Burlington Bees (25-28, 47-76) to a 3-0 win over the Clinton LumberKings (27-26, 62-59) in game one of tonight's double-header at Alliant Energy Field. Clinton returned the favor in the nightcap, blanking the Bees 5-0 to earn a split. The Bees lead this series 2-1, but the LumberKings still hold a 9-6 lead on the season series.
Burgos (5-10) allowed just one baserunner, a one-out walk to Abigail Sandoval in the bottom of the first inning, and retired the final 17 batters he faced. He struck out the side in both the third and fifth innings and struck out six of the final seven. He ranks third in the Midwest League with 156 K's on the year and now ranks ninth on the Bees' single season list. Burgos had thrown 95 pitches through six and Royals' organizational policy says no pitcher under 21 can ever throw more than 100 pitches, so Gabe DeHoyos came in to pitch the bottom of the seventh to try to finish what could have been the Bees' third no-hitter of the season. DeHoyos struck out Sandoval to start the inning, but Micah Furtado spoiled the no-hit bid with a bloop single off the fists to left. DeHoyos struck out Justin Hatcher and got Andrew Wishy to pop out to preserve the Bees' 7th shutout of the season and earn his first save in affiliate professional baseball. The Bees got on the board against Brian Mattoon (9-6) in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Chris Lubanski. The Bees added two more runs in the seventh against reliever Chris Cordeiro on a throwing error by the pitcher after a sacrifice bunt by Ed Lucas and a sacrifice fly by Luis Gonzalez. The Bees have scored six runs in the series without an RBI hit. They have three sac flies, two RBI groundouts, and the run coming in on the error.
Joel Kirsten (6-1) and Cesar Herrera stymied the Bees bats in game two. The Bees logged just five singles in the game. Kirsten allowed two and struck out six in five innings for the win. Game two was the 14th time this year that the Bees have been shutout this year. RH Justin Sherman (1-1) went the distance for his first professional complete game for the loss. He allowed two runs in the third on an RBI double by Larry Grayson who scored later in the inning on a groundout by Furtado. Josh Kreuzer blasted a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to complete the scoring.
The Bees and LumberKings will wrap up this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Alliant Energy Field. RH Greg Atencio (7-12, 5.35) will start for the Bees against RH Jose Garcia (1-2, 4.39) for the LumberKings. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show on the air at 6:40.
