West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

Comstock Park, MI- Garth McKinney hit his Whitecaps single season record 18th home run in a six run fifth inning that paved the way to a 11-0 win over the Beloit Snappers Thursday night.

McKinney took advantage of an inattentive Carlos Villanueva to create a run when he was on third base with Vince Blue at the plate in the second inning. He broke from third on an attempted steal and was halfway home when Villanueva rushed his throw and catcher Carlos Corporan stepped on home plate as McKinney slid under the tag. By rule, the pitcher is charged with a balk and the catcher is given catcher's interference. McKinney was credited with a run scored and Blue was awarded first base on the play to make it 1-0 'Caps.

Beloit's defensive woes didn't stop there as the Snappers totalled three errors. The 'Caps got all 11 runs on just seven hits including McKinney's grand slam in the fifth to put the team up 7-0. West Michigan added two more in both the seventh and eighth. Only three of West Michigan's 11 runs were earned. McKinney had five RBI on the night while Jason Knoedler's home run in the eighth plated two more. It was Knoedler's fourth homer of the season.

Brian Rogers and Danny Zell were masterful with Rogers pitching five innings allowing five hits, one walk and six strikeouts. Zell earned his second save of the season after pitching the last four innings allowing one hit, one walk and four strikeouts.

The Whitecaps will try to win the four-game series Friday night at 7 p.m. with Jordan Tata (5-11, 3.57) pitching against the Snappers Greg Moriera (8-5, 3.70).
