Kernels break loose for 11 runs, post rare home win

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Howie Kendrick had three hits and drove in three runs to power the Kernels to an 11-5 win over the South Bend Silverhawks Thursday afternoon in a Midwest League game played before a crowd of 3,056 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The win was only the Kernels' second in the six games during their current homestand. They are 11-19 in home games in the second half and 32-32 overall. Despite their so-so play at home, the Kernels improved to 68-54 overall, the second best record in the Midwest League. They are 26-27 in the second half with 17 games left in the regular season, five at home.

The Kernels notched a Taco Bell 10 Spot by scoring 10 or more runs for the 12th time this season. That means that beef tacos will be on sale for 39 cents at Cedar Rapids-Marion Taco Bell restaurants on Friday. Patrons must ask for the Taco Bell 10 Spot or the Kernels Special to receive the 39-cent tacos. There is a limit of 10 tacos per order.

The Kernels scored three runs in each of the first, fourth and sixth innings. Kendrick led off the Kernels' first with a double and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Warner Madrigal. Blake Balkcom hit a sacrifice fly and Matt Brown an RBI single.

Lino Garcia's two-run triple pulled South Bend within 3-2 in the top of the second.

The Kernels answered with two runs in the bottom of the second. Tommy Duenas had an RBI double and Kendrick a sacrifice fly.

The Kernels broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning, aided by two South Bend errors and a wild pitch, that stretched their lead to 8-2.

Kendrick's two-run single highlighted the Kernels' three-run sixth and cracked the Taco Bell 10 Spot.

Balkcom, Brown and Baltazar Lopez had two hits apiece for the Kernels, who had 13 hits.

Abel Moreno (9-7) limited South Bend to five hits and three runs over six innings for the win.

NIBLETS – The Kernels conclude their series against South Bend on Friday. It is Baseball, Hot Dogs, Apple Pie and Chevrolet Night. Fans can buy $2 hot dogs, and they will receive a coupon for a free slice of apple pie from Hy-Vee. Also, four fans will win used cars courtesy of Pat McGrath Chevyland. ...
