Urick, Yanks pound Cougars

Battle Creek, MI- Battle Creek pounded out a season-high 18 hits and routed Kane County 12-5 Thursday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. John Urick led the Yankees with two home runs and six RBI.

Urick¹s first home run came in the bottom of the first with Battle Creek trailing 1-0. With two on and one out he crushed a three-run home run over the right field fence to put the Yankees on top 3-1. Rafael Rodriguez drove in Matt Carson before the inning was over to give the Yankees a 4-1 lead.

After Kane County scored one in the top of the second, Battle Creek plated four more runs for an 8-2 lead. Luis Robles led off with a double and scored on a Hector Made sacrifice fly to make it 5-2. After a single by Erold Andrus, Urick belted his second home run of the game to put the Yankees on top by six.

Kane County scored three times in the third to climb back in it at 8-5, but the Yankees added three runs of their own in the fourth. Rodriguez drove in his second and third runs of the night on a single. He stole second and later scored on a Nick Walsh bunt single to give Battle Creek an 11-5 lead.

The Yankees added one more run in the sixth for the 12-5 final. Willie Vasquez led off with a single and later scored on a Walsh sacrifice fly.

Yankees¹ starter Brandon Harmsen went three innings, allowing five runs ‹ four earned ‹ on eight hits, but did not factor in the decision. Amad Stephens (1-2) pitched three innings in relief to get the win. Heath Castle, Paul Thorp and Mike Gardner each threw one inning in relief.

Kane County manager Dave Joppie was ejected in the third inning by home plate umpire Bill Davidson.

The Yankees are now 28-24 for the second half. The series wraps up Friday night at 7. Jason Jones will square off against Trent Peterson for Kane County.
