Frederick Keys News Release

Entering Friday night's game against Salem, the Keys had scored 40 of their 88 runs in innings seven through nine and Friday night proved to be no different. Frederick scored five runs in the seventh and one in the eighth as they went on to defeat the Red Sox, 8-4. With the win, the Keys improved to 10-5 on the year. Frederick did not win their 10th game of the season until game 27 in 2009.

The first runs of the game came in the third inning. With two out and LF David Mailman on first, 2B Oscar Tejada hit a sharp groundball to short and SS Mike Mooney could not handle. The next Salem batter, DH Tim Federowicz, came to the plate and drove a Kenny Moreland pitch into right-centerfield for a two-run double to give Salem a 2-0 advantage.

Trailing by two, Frederick got to Salem starter, Alex Wilson, in the fifth inning. With two down and two on, LF Xavier Avery hit a double off Wilson that would score C Brian Ward and 1B Jacob Julius. Avery finished the night 2-for-5 and increased his batting average to .389 on the season.

Both starting pitchers exited the game in the fifth with no-decisions. Moreland pitched five innings allowing two runs (zero earned) on three hits while striking out four. Wilson surrendered two runs on three hits over four and two-thirds. He struck out six and walked three on the evening.

Salem plated a run in the top of the seventh but Frederick responded right back. 1B Jacob Julius led off the bottom of the seventh with a double down the right field line. SS Mike Mooney was hit on the next pitch by Michael Lee. LF Xavier Avery loaded the bases after a bunt single and then CF Kyle Hudson did not need to take his bat of his shoulder to bring home Julius and tie the game at three. 2B L.J. Hoes had the biggest hit of the night, as he cleared the bases with a triple down the right field line. That was the first triple of the season by any Key and it could not have come in a more important spot. 3B Buck Britton drove home Hoes to increase the lead to 7-3 after seven innings.

Salem and Frederick would trade runs in the eighth inning on a pair of solo home runs. Salem's C Ryan Lavernway hit a solo home run off Brett Bordes in the top half of the eighth but RF Jacob Julius responded with his first home run as a Key in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Brandon Cooney threw a scoreless ninth to close out the win for Frederick. Sean Gleason picked up his first win of the season out of the bullpen while Salem's Michael Lee fell to 1-2 on the year.

Saturday afternoon, LHP Rick Zagone (0-1, 1.93) will get the start for Frederick and he will be opposed by RHP Stolmy Pimentel (2-0, 1.64). First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. on Loundon County Keys for Reading day presented by HBP, Inc. and College Savings Plan of Maryland.
