WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wilmington pounded Winston-Salem pitching for 17 hits and ten runs to snap the Dash's nine-game winning streak with 10-8 victory at BB&T Ballpark on Friday night. A sellout crowd of 6,411 witnessed the Dash lose its first game since April 13 in a seesaw affair.

The Dash (11-4) got off to a good start against Blue Rocks starter Jairo Cuevas (1-2), getting to the Dominican for three runs in the first inning. Brandon Short led off the game with a single, extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Two batters later, Jon Gilmore singled on a slow roller to third baseman Jason Taylor, who attempted to throw Gilmore out at first. The throw sailed into the Dash bullpen, allowing Short to score from first base. Gilmore's hit streak reached 11 with his infield single.

After Seth Loman singled, Luis Sierra drove in a run on a fielder's choice and Kenny Williams, Jr. doubled in a run to make it 3-0 Winston-Salem.

The Blue Rocks (7-8) responded in the third inning with four runs off Dash starter Stephen Sauer. The first two batters reached base on singles and advanced to second and third on a fielder's choice. The next four batters cracked consecutive RBI hits off Sauer to give Wilmington a sudden 4-3 lead.

The Rocks' advantage didn't last long, as the Dash piled up three more runs in the bottom of the third. Gilmore, Sierra, and Kyle Shelton all had run scoring singles to put Winston ahead 6-4.

Wilmington chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth against Sauer to tie the game at 6-6 after five innings.

With Hector Santiago (0-1) pitching in the sixth, the Blue Rocks put men on first and third with one out. Patrick Norris then grounded a ball to third base and Gilmore unsuccessfully tried to throw out Fernando Garcia, who was coming home. The run scored and Wilmington re-claimed the lead, 7-6.

The Blue Rocks tacked on three more runs in the eighth inning against Dash reliever Gregory Infante thanks to RBI knocks by Norris, Eric Hosmer, & Jamie Romak.

The insurance runs would prove useful, as Drew Garcia hit a wall-ball double in the bottom of the eighth to score a pair and narrow the deficit to 10-8.

The Dash's hopes for a ninth inning rally were extinguished by Wilmington's Barry Bowden, who struck out the side in order for his second save.

Cuevas picked up the win despite allowing six runs and ten hits in seven innings. It was his first victory since June 21, 2008 with the GCL Braves.

The 17 hits and ten runs allowed by Dash pitching were both season-highs. Winston's streak of starting pitchers allowing three runs or fewer in every game this season was snapped, as Sauer surrendered six runs in 4.2 innings of work.

The loss ended The Dash's nine-game win streak, which was the longest for the team in its last six seasons. Winston-Salem will look to begin a new win streak on Saturday night, when the team hosts Wilmington in the middle game of the three-game series. LHP Justin Edwards (2-0, 1.50) makes his third start of the season against LHP Michael Montgomery (1-0, 0.50). Montgomery is the Royals' top overall prospect according to Baseball America and leads the Carolina League in strikeouts this season.

First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The pre-game show begins at 6:45 on www.wsdash.com.

A limited number of tickets remain for the games on Saturday night and Sunday afternoon. Fans may purchase tickets by calling the Dash at (336) 714-2287 or visiting www.wsdash.com.
