CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Dustin Majewski's two-out, bases-loaded double in the top of the ninth inning drove home two runs and carried Kane County past the Kernels, 6-4, Saturday night in a Midwest League baseball game played before a crowd of 2,184 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The loss dropped the Kernels (23-18) three games behind Kane County (26-15) in the Western Division.

Brandon Wood and Bobby Wilson hit home runs for the Kernels, who suffered their first loss in seven Saturday games. Wood had three hits. The Kernels wasted a solid pitching performance by Michel Simard, who scattered six hits allowed one run and struck out seven in six innings.

Wood's home run with two outs in the first inning staked the Kernels to a 1-0 lead. It was his fifth home run of the season.

Kane County tied the game in the top of the second on Brian Snyder's RBI double.

Wilson's two-run home run in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie. It was his second home run of the season and boosted his RBI total to 24.

Kane County came back with three runs in the top of the seventh inning off Allen Buckley, who gave up two hits and walked two in one-third of an inning. Brian Ingram had a two-run single that tied the game and Luke Appert's sacrifice fly off Bob Zimmermann put the Cougars ahead, 4-3.

The Kernels tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh inning. Caleb Maher singled, went to third on Tommy Duenas' hit-and-run single and scored on Howie Kendrick's sacrifice fly.

Scott Hindman (0-1), the fourth of five Kernels pitchers, gave up an infield single and hit a batter leading off the Kane County ninth. He struck out a batter and got another on a sacrifice fly before Snyder drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch just off the outside corner. Majewski then rifled Hindman's 2-2 offering into right field for the game-winning hit.

J.R Pickens (2-0) pitched one scoreless inning, allowing two hits and striking out three, for the win. Jairo Garcia pitched a scoreless ninth for his 10th save.

The Kernels conclude the two-game series with Kane County on Sunday at 2 p.m. They continue their 12-game homestand with a four-game series against Dayton and Lansing. The homestand concludes on May 31. ... All Kernels games can be heard on The Zone, ESPN Radio 1600 AM with John Rodgers.
