Cougars beat the Kernels late, 6 - 4

Cedar Rapids, IA – The Kane County Cougars will stay in first place thanks to another two out rally and beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels 6 – 4 Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Dustin Majewski's late inning heroics helped the Cougars win their sixth straight contest, and have now won seven straight road games.

The Kernels jumped out to a quick lead in the 1st inning when Brandon Wood hit a two out solo home run. It was the first time in seven games that the Cougars opponent has scored first in a game.

The Cougars would answer in their next at bat when Brian Snyder drove an RBI double to right –center field scoring Vasili Spanos to tie the game at 1 – 1.

Neither team was able to score over the next three innings as a pitchers dual ensued between Cougars starter Chris Dunwell and the Kernels Michel Simard. The Kernels finally broke the tie game in the bottom of the sixth on a two run shot by Bobby Wilson to make it a 3 – 1 game.

The Cougars would answer again tying the game in the top of the seventh on two run bases loaded single by Brian Ingram and take the lead when Chris Tritle scored from third on a sacrifice fly to center by Luke Appert. The Cougars led after six and a half innings 4 – 3. Brigmer Leon came in relief of Dunwell in the bottom of the seventh and gave up one run on two hits to tie the game at 4 – 4. J.R. Pickens pitched a scoreless eighth inning and it set the stage for the ninth.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the top of the ninth when Dustin Majewski hit a bases loaded double to the wall scoring two runs to make it a 6 – 4 game. Jario Garcia shut down the Kernels in the ninth to post his tenth save on the year.

Sunday the Cougars wrap up the short two game road swing and the series with the Kernels. The Cougars will send the Trent Peterson who has yet to receive a decision after two starts. The Kernels will counter with right-hander Abel Moreno in the 2:00 game.
