Late Goal Lifts Bruins Past Penguins

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Alexander Khokhlachev capitalized on a turnover in the Penguins zone and fired home the game-winner with 1:29 left in regulation to help the Providence Bruins take a 5-4 victory from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Sunday at Dunkin' Donuts Center. Scott Wilson registered the first multi-goal game of his pro career as part of a three-point effort, but it could not prevent the Penguins from seeing their winless streak stretch to six games.

A 1-1 score after 20 minutes of hockey gave way to a second period that saw the Penguins and Bruins combine for six goals and three lead changes.

Providence defenseman Ben Youds put his team ahead for the first time in the contest at 3:42, batting home a rebound for a power play goal.

Tom Kuhnhackl helped the Penguins respond on the man-advantage at 9:37 of the same period, tipping Brian Dumoulin's wrist shot past goalie Jeremy Smith and starting a flurry that would see five goals scored over a span of 5:09.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton went back on top, 3-2, less than two minutes later when Wilson set up Carter Rowney in the slot for a turnaround shot that found a sliver of space inside the right post.

It took just 70 seconds for the score to be tied once again as Youds wired a slapshot from the blueline for both his and the Bruins' second power play marker of the game.

Wilson answered back at 13:22 with his second tally of the contest. From the bottom of the near circle in the Providence zone, the rookie forward was able to whistle a shot over the shoulder of Smith to the top corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton's 4-3 lead lasted just 84 seconds with Matt Lindbland redirecting Steve Eminger's right circle shot down and past Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff.

The Penguins would outshoot the Bruins, 14-4, in the third, but it was Providence's fourth shot that proved to be the difference. Colin Stuart gathered a turnover right outside the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton zone and one-handed a pass to Khokhlachev, who walked free into the slot before zipping the puck past the glove of Zatkoff.

Wilson's three-point afternoon began with a 5-on-4 goal at 15:19 of the first, but Rob Flick completed a 2-on-1 rush to knot the score with 29.1 seconds remaining until the intermission.

Both teams went 2-for-6 on the power play. Rowney also set an AHL career high with three points in the game (1G-2A). Zatkoff suffered his fourth straight loss, stopping 12-of-17 shots. Smith made 29 saves on 33 shots for Providence.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton is back at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza on Wednesday, Jan. 21 when they battle the St. John's IceCaps at 7:05 p.m.
