Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons fell to the Binghamton Senators, 6-3, this afternoon at the MassMutual Center.
The Falcons now sit at 26-11-4-0 on the season and 1-1-0-0 in completing the two-game season series with the Senators. Despite the loss, the team still holds the lead of the Northeast Division with 56 points. The Senators move to 17-18-3-1.
Falcons netminder Anton Forsberg allowed four goals on 17 shots before being relieved by Oscar Dansk to start the third period. Dansk stopped all nine shots he faced. Senators netminder Peter Mannino turned away 31 of 34, while picking up his first victory with the Senators. The Falcons were able to capitalize on one of four power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit allowed its first goal in four games, allowing Binghamton to convert on one of five man-advantages.
After a scoreless first period, the Senators scored two goals in under two minutes to take the lead halfway through the second frame. Buddy Robinson circled around the net and wristed the puck over Forsberg's right shoulder to put the Senators on the board. Aaron Johnson and Alex Guptill were credited with the assists. Just 1:46 later, David Marshall received a pass from Garrett Thompson in the right wing circle and lit the lamp to build up a two goal lead.
Binghamton added to their lead at the 12:05 mark. Robinson tallied his second goal of the game after coming down the ice on the right side and sniping it top left corner. Daniel New picked up a point on the play.
The Falcons finally responded a minute later when Frederic St. Denis found the puck in front of the cage and tipped it past Mannino. However, the Senators were able to take back a three goal lead while on a 5-on-3 power play to round out the period. Forsberg made the save on a Chris Wideman shot, but the rebound settled in front of an open Shane Prince to the left of the crease for him to net the team's fourth of the game. Carter Camper grabbed credit for the secondary assist.
The Falcons came within one after two unanswered goals to open the third period, but were unable to overtake the Senators. Lukas Sedlak notched his sixth of the season after firing a shot that rung off the cross bar and down into the net with the help of Trent Vogelhuber and Mike Hoeffel. Austin Madaisky contributed to the comeback effort just after the halfway mark. T.J. Tynan threw the puck out to Ryan Craig at the goal line. His pass to the high slot set Madaisky up for his 12th of the season.
After pulling Dansk to add an extra Falcons attacker late in the third, Matt Puempel and Prince each netted empty net goals to down the Falcons, 6-3.
The Falcons travel to face the Hartford Wolf Pack on Jan. 23 at 7 p.m. before returning home to the MassMutual Center to host the Providence Bruins on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
