Pensacola Pelicans News Release
The largest crowd of the year witnessed a great game and great fireworks show after the Pensacola Pelicans (1-2) and Wichita Wingnuts (2-1) third and final game of the series. Wichita edged Pensacola 5-2 in a quick 2:19 game.
The Wingnuts would strike first and break a scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Chris Colton and Kevin Hooper would lead off the inning with base hits. Michael Ventura would get hit by the pitch on a 1-2 offering from Zach Cline to load the bases. Wingnuts cleanup hitter, Dustin Mohr would drive in the games first two runs on a base hit to right which scored Colton and Hooper. With runners on first and second, next batter Steve Pearson drove in Ventura on a line drive single to center to make it 3-0 Wingnuts.
The Pelicans would get on the board by way of a Rafael Alvarez homerun in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Alvarez turned on Brad Davis's 1-0 pitch and hooked it just around the right field foul pole for his ninth homerun of the season, cutting the Wingnuts lead down to two.
In the bottom half of the seventh, the Pels would tack on another run. Ricardo Cordova doubled into the left center field gap with one down in the inning. Third baseman, Evan Conley drove in Cordova on a base hit to left to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
Wingnut hitters would add another run in top of the eight off of newly acquired pitcher, Paul Phillips. Michael Thompson led off the inning for the Wingnuts with a double into the right center field gap. With one down, Pearson ripped a double down the left field line scoring Thompson on the play, giving them a 4-2 lead.
The Wingnuts increased their lead as they would score a run in the top of the ninth. A pair of walks and a base hit from Brenan Hererra would score Colton to make it a 5-2 ballgame.
John Webb will take the mound tomorrow night as the Pelicans travel to Grand Prairie to begin a seven game road trip.
