Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - The Lansing Lugnuts used a four run first inning to grab an early lead en route to defeating the Captains by a score of 8-1 at Classic Park on Saturday Afternoon. The Lugnuts opened the game with five straight hits, and scored a run on a bases loaded walk. After the opening half inning, the score was 4-0 Lugnuts.
Lansing tacked on a run in the fourth inning, when Gustavo Pierre singled and moved to second and then scored on a base hit by Balbino Fuenmayor. In the fifth, Lansing added three more runs. There were three hits in the inning, highlighted by the bases clearing double by Pierre, and the Lugnuts had an 8-0 lead at the halfway point.
The Captains prevented the shutout in the bottom of the seventh inning. Eric Haas reached on an error by Pierre. Jorge Martinez singled Haas to third base. Martin Cervenka grounded out to short and was credited with an RBI as Haas came home to score. The score was 8-1 Lansing.
Mitch Brown (0-1) started for the Captains and took the loss. Brown lasted just two thirds of an inning and allowed six hits four earned runs, and one walk. Brown gave way to Michael Peoples. Peoples pitched three innings and allowed one earned run, on three hits. Peoples walked one and struck out five. Jack Wagoner came into the ball game in the fourth inning and pitched one and one third innings allowing three runs, all earned, on three hits, and three strikeouts. Luis Morel entered the ball game in the sixth inning and pitched three scoreless innings. Morel allowed two hits and struck out seven in his first outing of the season. Louis Head pitched the ninth for the Captains and did not allow a run.
Alonzo Gonzalez (1-0) started for Lansing and earned the win. Gonzalez pitched six innings, allowed just three hits, two walks and struck out six. Griffin Murphy entered and pitched an inning allowed two hits, and one unearned run. Ian Kadish pitched one inning and set the Captains down in order and fanned two. In the ninth, the ball was given to Arik Sikula. Sikula did not allow a run.
Lake County's opening weekend concludes as the Lugnuts remain in Eastlake on Sunday Afternoon. The Captains will send RHP Jake Sisco (0-0,0.00) to the hill and Lansing will counter with RHP Roberto Osuna (0-0,0.00). First pitch is at 1:30 PM.
