Gantt Homers But Hawks Rally Past Hot Rods
April 6, 2013 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
South Bend, IN - Marty Gantt hit the first Hot Rod home run of the season, but the South Bend Silver Hawks (2-1) scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to storm past the Bowling Green Hot Rods (1-2) in a 6-5 win at Coveleski Stadium on Saturday night. In the third game of the four-game set, Tommy Coyle also drove in two runs for the Hot Rods, who drop their second straight game. In his 2013 debut, starter Dylan Floro tossed five impressive innings for the Hot Rods.
For the third straight night to start the season, the Hot Rods scored first. Starting the rally, Gantt and Joey Rickard were hit by pitches with one out in the third inning. Coyle then singled home Gantt, and Rickard was brought in a Tyler Goeddel RBI groundout. Meanwhile, Floro was spinning a gem in the starter's role, allowing just two hits and no runs in five frames.
In the top of the fifth inning, Marty Gantt became the first Hot Rods to homer in 2013 when he smacked a Kyle Schepel hanging breaking ball over the fence in left field. After South Bend scored a run in the seventh, the Hot Rods scored two more times in the top of the eighth inning when extra-base hits by Coyle and Luke Maile both brought in runs.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, South Bend began their improbable and dramatic rally. Frazier Hall delivered the game-tying play on his double to right field. Roidany Aguila then followed with an RBI-double of his own to place the Silver Hawks in the lead for good.
Thanks to three walks in the top of the ninth, the Hot Rods loaded the bases with one out. However, the aptly-named Chris Capper came in and slammed the door with two groundouts to preserve the dramatic win.
