Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps used four home runs, all to left field, to defeat the Great Lakes Loons, 13-0 on Saturday night at Dow Diamond.
"They were a better baseball team tonight," Loons manager Razor Shines said. "How do you bounce back? You play baseball. It's a long season. That's a good baseball team in there. We've got a good baseball team too. We're going to be just fine. This is a good club and we're going to fight to the finish."
Fort Wayne cleanup hitter Dane Phillips put the TinCaps on the board first when he hit a two-run opposite-field home run that went 360 feet straightaway to left field.
The TinCaps added another run when third baseman Gabriel Quintana, who went 3-for-5 on the night, hit a massive 385-foot home run to left field that hit the fence behind the concourse near the left field fire pit.
Fort Wayne extended their lead with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. Felix Cabrera reached on an infield single, advanced to third base after two throwing errors and scored on a Maxx Tissenbaum single. After the Tissenbaum single, three-hitter Jeremy Baltz hit a double to drive in leadoff hitter Mallex Smith and advanced Tissenbaum to third base. Tissenbaum scored the third run of the inning on a wild pitch.
The TinCaps had another big inning in the sixth, scoring four more runs in the road half of the frame. Alberth Martinez scored on another Tissenbaum single and Baltz hit a 380-foot three-run home run that landed on the concourse behind left field. Tissenbaum had two RBI in the game.
Jharel Cotton started for the Loons and gave up three runs on four hits through the first four innings, but allowed three runs in the fifth before getting lifted for Ralston Cash. Cotton went 4.1 innings and picked up the loss. He gave up six runs on five hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Baltz, who was 3-for-5 with six RBI, added his second home run of the night in the eighth inning, a two-run 400-foot home run to left field that was hit out of Dow Diamond.
Fort Wayne added another run in the ninth when Martinez hit a double that scored Quintana.
Justin Hancock started for the TinCaps and got credit for the win. He went five innings and held the Loons scoreless on two hits. Hancock struck out seven and only walked one.
The Loons (0-3) will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, when they wrap up the four-game set with the TinCaps (3-0). Game time is 3:05 p.m. Carlos Frias is expected to start for Great Lakes and Zach Elfin is expected to start for Fort Wayne. Both will be making their first start of the season.
