South Bend Silver Hawks News Release

Capper Puts Lid on Bowling Green Rally At the time of Saturday night's first pitch, the temperature at Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium was 65 degrees. But the South Bend Silver Hawk' bats didn't warm up until the end of the game. Frazier Hall's two-run double keyed a five-run bottom of the 8th inning and reliever Chris Capper worked out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the 9th to close out a 6-5 comeback victory for the Hawks over the Bowling Green Hot Rods Saturday night.

The Tampa Bay Rays affiliated Hot Rods struck first in the third inning beginning with South Bend starter Kyle Schepel plunking Marty Gantt and Joey Rickard back to back. Tommy Coyle would follow with a single to right field to bring home Gantt. Designated hitter, Tyler Goeddel's groundout to short would allow Joey Rickard to score and give Bowling Green an early 2-0 lead. Aided by an 17 knot wind, Marty Gantt homered to left field on a 1-2 count off Schepel to extend the Hot Rods lead to 3-0. Socrates Brito continued his hot start to the season with a leadoff triple in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Silver Hawks, the Class A Affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, got on the scoreboard when first basemen Hall drove him in with a single to left field to cut the lead to 3-1. The Hot Rods would get the run back and more in the top of the 8th inning off eventual game winner, JR Bradley (1-1). Two runs would score in the inning on a Tommy Coyle triple and a Luke Maile double, both to right-center field. The seemingly secure 5-1 lead did not last long, however.

The Hawks' bats would come to life in the bottom of the eighth. Kevin Medrano started the rally with an infield single. Brandon Drury followed with a double, down the left field line, before Ryan Court singled to center to plate Medrano. Before Brito stepped into the box, Ryan Garton (0-1) entered in relief for Bowling Green. Brito's RBI bloop to shallow left field brought home Drury. Hall would bring home Court and Brito with a double to right. The Hawks would then score the go-ahead run on Roidany Aguila's double to deep left field off the outstretched glove of Bowling Green leftfielder, Gantt.

The five-run rally in the bottom of the 8th wasted a good season debut by Hot Rods starting pitcher Dylan Floro, who tossed five shutout innings, allowing only three baserunners while striking out five. The Silver Hawks brought in Enrique Burgos to close the game but he struggled with his control, walking three batters in one-third of an inning. Capper was able to get out of the jam by inducing a ground ball to first, to cut the runner off at the plate, followed by a 6-4 force out to end the game. The teams close out the season-opening four-game set with a Sunday matinee. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
