Omaha Lancers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA. - The Lancers traveled north tonight (12/11) to take on the Sioux City Musketeers for a battle to sit alone is second place, as the two squads are currently locked at 26 points in the western conference.
The first period of play started with a lot of offensive momentum by the Musketeers, but the Lancers were the team to strike first in this one. Following a tripping penalty by Luke Antonacci, of Sioux City, the Omaha power-play got to work.
Matt Basgall corralled the puck at the blue line, found Owen Fowler down low, who hit Cam Mitchell with a pass through traffic. Mitchell then launched a wrist shot that made contact with the shaft of Sioux City goaltender, Alex Tracy's stick, but still found the back of the net, making it 1-0 Lancers, just 8:45 into the matchup.
That was followed up just a 1:34 later as Omaha goaltender, Kevin Pasche turned the puck over behind the net to Charlie Schoen. Schoen then found Owen McLaughlin in the slot who knocked home a goal into a wide open net to lock the game at one goal a side, just over the halfway point in the period.
In the closing five minutes of the period, the Lancers found themselves on the right side of another tripping call. That is when Mitchell and Garrett Wright constructed exquisite tic-tac-toe passing in the offensive zone, resulting in a goal from Jared Wright, taking the 2-1 lead that they took into the first intermission.
The second period held the same intensity the first period did. With the Lancers still getting outshot, but not giving up many scoring chances.
The lone goal of the period came from Nick Pierre with the assist from Grant Slukynsky with just 5:40 left in the second. Pierre was able to beat out Kennedy O'Connor and slipped the puck in, short side on Pasche to knot the game at two goals apiece heading into the third period.
The third period consisted of a lot of offensive momentum for the Lancers. Putting up 14 shots on goal in the period, leading to many scoring chances. But Alex Tracy stood strong back in the blue paint for the Musketeers.
Kevin Pasche stopped eight third period shots for the Lancers, taking the game into overtime all tied up, 2-2.
The 3-on-3 overtime period resulted in two quality scoring chances for each team, but the defense came out on top and silence both.
The Sioux City Musketeers managed to cap off a win in a shootout as Luke Antonacci and Bennett Schimek got pucks by Pasche while Tracy at the other end stopped shots from Garrett Wright and Cam Mitchell.
The Lancers will be back in action on December 17th for a 7:05 P.M. puck drop in Des Moines to take on the Buccaneers. That game can be caught on Mixlr and HockeyTV.
