Bridgeport Islanders News Release

PORTLAND, Maine - Mario Lamoureux notched his first American Hockey League goal, but it wasn't enough as the Bridgeport Sound Tigers fell to the Portland Pirates, 4-2 on Friday night at Cross Insurance Arena.

The Sound Tigers controlled the pace of play in the early going and were rewarded for their efforts. John Persson used his speed down the left wing and roofed a shot over the right-handed catching Louis Domingue for a 1-0 lead. Alan Quine and Adam Pelech notched assists on Persson's third goal in two games.

Bridgeport had a chance to add to their lead with a power play soon after the goal, but failed to convert. This left the door open for a pair of quick strikes by the Pirates.

The first goal came after a 3-on-2 for the Pirates that led to a bevy of chances. Kevin Poulin made several stops but could not cover the puck. Brendan Shinnimin found it loose in the slot and flipped a shot over Poulin to tie the game up at 1-1.

Just 51 seconds after the Shinnimin tally, Lucas Lessio put the Pirates up by one. Lessio danced through the Sound Tigers defense, somehow got a shot off and beat Poulin high over the glove to make it 2-1. Lessio's 10th of the season capped an exciting first period.

The second was the time for the goalies to shine. First it was Domingue, stoning Zolnierczyk on a partial breakaway. Soon after, Poulin made a massive double save, robbing Eric Selleck on a breakaway, then making another stop from the seat of his pants to keep it a one-goal game.

Bridgeport finally tied up the game midway through the second period. After a long shift in the offensive zone, Colton Gillies found Lamoureux in front of the net, who ripped a 15-footer past Domingue for his first AHL goal. Lamoureux's first came just three days after he signed a Professional Try Out with the Sound Tigers.

It looked as if the teams would skate into the intermission tied up, but an unfortunate call against the Sound Tigers cost them. On a race for the puck where Zolnierczyk looked to beat the defensemen to the hashmark, the linesman whistled the play for icing. On the resulting defensive zone faceoff, Brandon Gormley took advantage by sneaking a shot past Poulin to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes.

The Sound Tigers had just eight shots in the final frame, with the best chance coming off the stick of Scooter Vaughan. The forward fired a shot that just got a tick of Domingue's shoulder, preserving the lead for Portland.

Eric Selleck finished the scoring off on a tic-tac-toe passing play with Tyler Gaudet and Greg Miller.

Special teams were a non-factor in the contest, as the Sound Tigers went 0-for-5 on the man advantage, while Portland went 0-for-8.

The two teams play again tomorrow for Pucks & Pigskins night at Webster Bank Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
