St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps scored a season-high five goals in the third period to defeat the Binghamton Senators 5-2 Friday night at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton, NY.
Kyle MacKinnon, Julien Brouillette and Chase Balisy scored 2:04 apart in the opening three minutes of the final frame and Scott Kosmachuk and Carl Klingberg added insurance markers as the IceCaps improved to 1-1 on their current five-game road trip. All-Star Connor Hellebuyck turned in an impressive outing, stopping 37 shots for his 18th win of the season.
Binghamton got on the board just past the midway point of the first period. Derek Grant wristed a shot from inside the blueline that Hellebuyck got a piece of but the puck trickled through and across the goal line for a 1-0 Senators lead.
After firing 19 shots without any luck in the second, the IceCaps came out firing in the third. MacKinnon deflected a Brenden Kichton shot on the power play 41 seconds in to tie it at one.
Just 32 seconds later, Brouillette took a great pass in the slot from Blair Riley and the defenceman ripped a shot past Senators goalie Andrew Hammond to give St. John's a 2-1 lead.
Then, 1:32 after Brouillette's marker, Balisy converted a loose puck in front past the outstretched pad of Hammond to increase the lead to 3-1, with assists going to John Albert and Carl Klingberg.
St. John's added insurance at 14:33 on Kosmachuk's eighth of the season. Will O'Neill found a streaking Kosmachuk off the bench just inside the Senators blueline and the rookie cruised in before going under the bar on the blocker side to make it 4-1.
Binghamton narrowed the gap to 4-2 on a power play at 16:11 as Chris Wideman blasted a one-timer from the left point, but that's as close as they would get. Klingberg added the empty-netter with 1:18 left to seal the win.
The IceCaps continue their five-game road trip tomorrow night vs. the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (8:30 p.m.).
