Oklahoma City Barons News Release

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Drew MacIntyre made 31 saves and Brody Sutter netted a third period goal for the Charlotte Checkers who skated past the Oklahoma City Barons 3-2 Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Sutter's goal came 33 seconds into the third period with the Checkers on the power play stemming from a late second period tripping call on Oklahoma City's Iiro Pakarinen. Charlotte's Justin Shugg sent a pass from the left point to the right circle where Sutter flipped a wrist shot over the shoulder of Barons defenseman Brandon Davidson and glove of goalie Laurent Brossoit to give the Checkers a 3-1 lead they wouldn't relinquish.

The loss was Oklahoma City's second on the road in its last 10, with both losses coming at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Recording his third regulation loss and fourth loss overall in his last five decisions after posting a six-game winning streak, Brossoit's record fell to 13-7-1.

Charlotte took control of the game early, outshooting the Barons 11-5 in a scoreless first period. The Checkers' momentum extended into the second period when Justin Shugg sent a long pass from the left corner of the OKC zone to the right point and Trevor Carrick fired a one timer that sailed past Brossoit at 4:27 for a 1-0 Charlotte lead.

Zach Boychuk added to the Checkers' lead at 14:35 of the second when he took a pass from the left side of the goal line from Sutter and put the puck past a sliding Brossoit from the right side of the Barons net. The power play goal came with the Barons' Connor Jones serving an interference penalty assessed at 13:39.

Oklahoma City netted its first goal at the 17:29 mark of the second when Curtis Hamilton sent a wrist shot from the right circle that Kellen Jones deflected past MacIntyre, cutting the Checkers' lead to 2-1.

Trailing 3-1 after Sutter's goal in the third period, the Barons tightened Charlotte's lead with an empty net and 50 seconds remaining in the game. After Andrew Miller sent a shot from the point, Matt Ford's rebound attempt left the puck loose in the Checkers' crease where Pakarinen flipped it over the outstretched stick of MacIntyre.

In the closing seconds, the Barons managed to put a number of shots on net but failed to tie the game.

The Barons' next game is Friday, Jan. 30, when they return home for the first of a two-game series against the Lake Erie Monsters in a 7 p.m. start at the Cox Convention Center.

The AHL All-Star Game will be played in Utica, N.Y. on Monday, Jan. 26. Among the players selected to the game for Oklahoma City are defenseman Brad Hunt and goal tender Richard Bachman, with Miller filling in for Barons captain and current Edmonton Oiler Anton Lander. The 6 p.m. CST game can be viewed on Fox Sports Southwest or listened to on SiriusXM radio.
