Daytona Tortugas News Release

Daytona Beach, FL - After scoring a combined 18 runs in their last two games, the Daytona Tortugas (28-17, 65-50) mustered just two hits in a 3-0 loss to the Lakeland Flying Tigers (10-33, 43-69) on Thursday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.

LHP Nick Routt (L, 5-2) and Jonathan Maciel dueled through four scoreless innings, with just four total hits allowed until the fifth. Lakeland started the game's first run-scoring rally in the fifth, when a single from Raph Rhymes and a walk to Javier Betancourt chased Routt from the game. Two batters later, Curt Powell lined a two-run triple to right center field off RHP Scott Brattvet, and the Flying Tigers were ahead 2-0.

Routt finished after 4.1 innings, having allowed two runs on six hits with a walk and six strikeouts

Daytona threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning when Maciel issued three consecutive one-out walks, but Lakeland managed to turn a 4-2-6 double play - throwing home and then back to second - to strand the bases loaded.

The Flying Tigers padded their lead to 3-0 in the ninth, drawing a walk and hitting back-to-back singles off RHP Evan Mitchell. It was just the second earned run Mitchell has allowed since May 31 (27 innings).

A 3B Taylor Sparks single in the second and a SS Carlton Daal single in the seventh provided Daytona's only offense. The Tortugas drew five walks, but went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.

Lakeland's Calvin Drummon (W, 3-1) allowed one hit in 2.2 innings of relief, and Gabe Hemmer (S, 1) recorded the final six outs in order with four strikeouts.

The two teams will face off again on Friday night at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. LHP Amir Garrett (7-6, 2.68) is set to start for Daytona, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET. Friday is a Dog Day at The Jack, which means canine friends are welcome to join the fun for just $2. All proceeds from dog tickets benefit the Halifax Humane Society.
