Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
DUNEDIN, FL - The Dunedin Blue Jays (51-64) fell by a 10-3 margin to the Daytona Tortugas (65-49) on Wednesday night, but finished the homestand with a 4-2 record.
Daytona opened the game with a run in the first when Jeff Gelalich doubled in Phillip Irvin for the early lead. A three-run fourth is all the offense that the Tortugas would need to put the game out of reach. Carlton Daal and Wendell Soto each contributed RBI singles in the frame.
Dunedin trailed 6-0 entering the eighth inning, but made some late noise when Jason Leblebijian walked to begin the inning followed by an Andy Fermin single. Jorge Saez, the next batter single through the hole at short scoring Leblebijian on the play. The scoring was capped in the inning when J.D. Davis reached on a lined hit to center, plating Fermin and cutting the deficit to 6-2.
Daytona tallied four insurance runs in the ninth. Taylor Sparks homered for two runs in the inning.
The D-Jays were not finished though as the club pushed another across in the ninth. Mitch Nay took first base after being hit by a pitch and was advanced to second on a walk by Derrick Loveless. Fermin then singled for a second time, driving home Nay.
Sean Reid-Foley took the loss for Dunedin and Jackson Stephens earned the win.
Sean Reid-Foley went 3.2 innings, allowing four runs. The Toronto Blue Jay's fourth-ranked prospect retired 11-consecutive batters, though, starting the stretch with two outs in the first inning. The righty struck out three and walked three during his outing.
The D-Jays will travel to Brevard County for a three-game set beginning tomorrow, Thursday, August 13th against the Manatees. Southpaw Alonzo Gonzalez will open the road trip on the mound for Dunedin and he will be countered by Wei-Chung Wang of Brevard County. The Jays will return to Dunedin on Monday, August 17th to begin a three-game series against the Clearwater Threshers at 6:30PM.
